Role Description

This is a fully remote position, open to candidates based in the United States.

Pay: $50–$150/hr

Role Title: Consular Officer / Passport Specialist

Role Type: Contractor

Location: Remote

Time Commitment: 20-30 hours/week, short-term project

The company is looking for former Consular Officers and Passport Specialists to help evaluate and improve AI systems on passport and citizenship topics. You’ll use your State Department experience to:

• Check that questions sound like real applicants and that answers are correct on complex cases.
• Ensure accuracy comes first; no AI experience is needed; your domain knowledge is what matters.

Scope of Work:

• Review sample passport and citizenship questions and flag any that don’t sound like what real people ask.
• Write rubrics that define a correct, complete answer for complex cases, such as lost, stolen, or damaged passports, name changes, and citizenship documentation.
• Cover situations involving minors, custody, and applicants born or living abroad in your rubrics.
• Evaluate AI-generated answers against your rubrics, flagging errors, omissions, and outdated guidance.
• Share clear written feedback with the project team, working asynchronously.

Qualifications

• Former State Department experience in a passport agency (Passport Specialist/Adjudicator) or consular section (Consular Officer)
• 1+ years adjudicating or advising on passport or citizenship matters
• Working knowledge of citizenship and nationality rules and passport eligibility
• US-based
• Able to start quickly and commit 20-30 hours/week
• Clear, precise writing

Requirements

• Experience with document fraud detection (Nice to Have)
• Experience with name change and identity documentation cases (Nice to Have)
• Experience creating guides, FAQs, or training materials (Nice to Have)
• Experience helping a diverse range of applicants, including non-English-speaking customers (Nice to Have)
