Role Description
The primary function of this role is to lead and oversee the preparation and review of individual, partnership, corporate, and non-profit tax returns while supporting broader accounting operations, including financial reporting, general ledger management, and compliance. The Tax Team Lead serves as a key technical resource for the tax team, ensuring work is accurate, timely, and compliant with applicable tax laws and regulations. This role is responsible for managing workflow and deadlines, reviewing complex tax engagements, providing guidance and support to team members, and helping develop the technical skills of junior staff.
Key Responsibilities

Tax Leadership & Team Oversight

Oversee and coordinate the day-to-day workflow of the tax team to ensure assignments are appropriately prioritized and client work is completed accurately and within established deadlines.

Serve as a primary resource for Tax Associates and team members by answering tax and accounting questions and providing guidance to resolve issues efficiently.

Mentor, train, and support the professional development of Tax Associates through coaching, feedback, and technical guidance.

Assist with onboarding and training new Tax Associates on tax preparation processes, accounting procedures, software, and internal expectations.

Monitor tax deadlines, outstanding client information, and team workloads to proactively identify potential delays and develop solutions.

Assist management with identifying staffing, workload, and resource needs, particularly during peak tax seasons.

Support a collaborative, ethical, and efficient work environment by promoting accountability, knowledge sharing, and adherence to company policies and procedures.

Tax Preparation, Review & Compliance

Prepare and review individual (1040), partnership (1065), corporate (1120), and nonprofit (990) tax returns, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations.

Conduct secondary and final reviews of prepared tax returns, identifying errors, inconsistencies, and areas requiring additional research or clarification.

Provide technical expertise and guidance on complex tax matters, including tax return preparation, calculations, compliance requirements, and client-specific issues.

Research and assist with the resolution of complex tax issues while remaining current on federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.

Support the fulfillment of various compliance-related reporting requirements.

Client Service & Advisory Support

Deliver exceptional client service through timely, accurate, and professional communication.

Communicate directly with clients regarding tax questions, missing information, technical matters, and other issues as needed.

Collaborate with clients and internal stakeholders to address tax and accounting needs accurately and efficiently.

Process Improvement & Technical Support

Identify opportunities to improve tax preparation processes, workflows, and procedures to increase efficiency, consistency, and accuracy.

Assist in developing and maintaining internal tax procedures, checklists, training materials, and other resources.

Troubleshoot Lacerte issues and provide technical support to team members to maintain workflow efficiency.

Provide support and guidance related to QuickBooks, payroll, and other accounting-related questions.

Accounting & Financial Reporting Support

Process daily transactions into general ledger accounts.
-
Prepare and enter journal entries.

Transact and reconcile commission revenues.
-
Process accounts payable payments and accounts receivable receipts.
-
Monitor cash balances across multiple entities and communicate potential issues.
-
Participate in month-end closing activities and assist with resolving accounting discrepancies.

Assist in the preparation and review of internal financial statements for multiple entities.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Collaborate with other departments and leadership to ensure client and internal accounting needs are addressed accurately and timely.

Support firm initiatives and special projects as assigned.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications

Bachelorβs degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration required
-
Current Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) designation required

Minimum of 5 years of tax preparation experience, including Forms 1040, 1065, 1120, and 990
-
Prior experience reviewing tax returns, providing technical guidance, or leading tax workflows preferred

Experience with accounting functions such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger activities preferred

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel

Experience with Lacerte, TaxDome, QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar tax and accounting software

Strong knowledge of tax compliance, accounting principles, and financial reporting

Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills

Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively support clients and team members

Demonstrated leadership, professionalism, ethical judgment, and attention to detail

Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Ability to travel up to 10% as needed
