Role Description
The American Heart Association has an opportunity for a Grant and Proposal Writing Intern in our Mission Advancement department. Mission Advancement is responsible for raising foundation and government grants, individual major gifts ($100,000 or more), and estate gifts from donors who wish to make an impact and leave a lasting legacy. The majority of our major gift requests are presented in writing, through a proposal or application process or at the donor’s invitation. In this role, you will gain on-the-job experience learning how to:

Identify new prospects.

Develop a fundraising proposal strategy.

Write and customize compelling proposals to raise funds for prioritized initiatives of the AHA.
The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.
Internship Overview:

Time Commitment: 20-25 hours per week

Responsibilities
-
Conduct external research on prospective foundation donors using specific database tools and basic internet research.
-
Reach out to assigned foundations to inquire about opportunities and document information in the CRM (Salesforce).

Attend planning meetings with seasoned fundraisers to develop strategy and cultivation plans for donors and prospects.

Use resources and templates to write applications and customize proposals.

Document donor plans and activity in Salesforce CRM and provide regular progress reporting.

Work on special assignments as requested.

Handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and professionalism.

Adhere to ethical guidelines and data privacy regulations.
Qualifications
-
Candidates who are college seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in nonprofit management, health administration, communications with a nonprofit focus, and public administration are encouraged to apply.

1 year of experience in research or grants administration with a funding organization, academic institution, or relevant coursework.

Excellent writing skills – ability to inspire, concisely convey information and persuade support.

Research skills - An ability to do “deep dives” in individuals, companies, and foundations.

Strong analytical skills, comfortable with qualitative and quantitative data.

Intermediate to highly skilled with Microsoft Excel.

Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

Ability to work independently and professionally in a corporate environment.

Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities.

Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Canva.

Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection.

Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
