[Hiring] Senior Software Engineer @Very

Role Description

As a Senior Level Software Engineer, you'll join a client's engineering team through Very's staff augmentation model, working as an embedded member of their team on high-traffic, business-critical systems. Your main focus is AWS: helping design a multi-region architecture for redundancy and scale, and defining it as code with AWS CDK and Terraform. You'll also work across the stack, from backend services to front-end features.

This role is hands-on and possibly long term. You'll work in the client's codebase, tools and processes, take part in their code reviews and on-call rotation, and report day to day to their engineering leads, while staying part of the Very team. At Very, a senior engineer has deep expertise in their specialty and works independently in their domain without needing detailed direction.

This is not an easy role. You'll work under real deadlines with a client who expects you to be available, proactive and delivering from day one. If you like doing hard things well, you'll fit right in.

What You’ll Be Working On

• Capture technical requirements and contribute to high-level and low-level design for cloud solutions on AWS.
• Design and implement multi-region AWS architecture, including redundancy, failover and disaster recovery for critical services.
• Define, deploy and maintain infrastructure as code using AWS CDK and Terraform.
• Build and scale complex, microservice-based, event-driven systems.
• Build features across backend and frontend components as needed.
• Implement testing strategies and automation across the stack.
• Take part in the on-call rotation and help maintain system health, performance and reliability.
• Collaborate across engineering, design and product to deliver high-quality outcomes.
• Identify and proactively address potential technical or operational risks before they affect customers.

Outcomes

• Deliver Multi-Region Resilience: Help stand up a highly available, multi-region AWS footprint that keeps critical services running through failures.
• Scale With Confidence: Make sure systems handle growth and traffic spikes with strong performance and controlled cloud costs.
• Codify Infrastructure: Deliver clean, reusable, well-documented CDK and Terraform the team can build on.
• Deliver High-Quality Features: Ship secure, reliable code that meets requirements, follows standards and delivers measurable business value.
• Be a Trusted Team Member: Integrate fully with the client's team and become someone they rely on.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain AWS infrastructure using AWS CDK and Terraform.
• Contribute to architecture decisions for multi-region deployment, redundancy and scaling.
• Implement features across frontend, backend and cloud components.
• Write clean, scalable and secure code and infrastructure that meets the client's and Very's engineering standards.
• Create and maintain automated tests across all layers of the stack.
• Own deployments, CI/CD pipelines, logging, monitoring and alerting.
• Work within the client's engineering processes, tools and team rituals (standups, sprint planning, code reviews).
• Take part in the 24/7 on-call rotation and help diagnose and resolve production issues.
• Support documentation and knowledge sharing within the team.

Qualifications

• BS or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
• 8+ years of professional software development experience.
• Significant hands-on experience designing, building and operating production systems on AWS.
• Proven experience with infrastructure as code using AWS CDK and/or Terraform.
• Full software development lifecycle experience, including requirements, design, implementation, testing, deployment and operations.
• Experience building complex, event-driven, microservice-based systems.
• Strong understanding of production-grade system reliability, observability and security.

Great to have

• Ad tech experience (for example, real-time bidding (RTB) and real-time ad auctions, working with SSPs, DSPs, ad exchanges or header bidding/Prebid) is a strong plus.
• Experience working embedded in client or distributed teams (staff augmentation or consulting) is a strong plus.

Technical Proficiency

• Deep expertise in AWS, including designing and running highly available, multi-region architectures (redundancy, failover, data replication, disaster recovery).
• Hands-on proficiency with AWS CDK and Terraform.
• Strong experience with AWS services.
• Experience with scaling, performance tuning and cloud cost optimization.
• Strong backend development skills in Python and/or Node.js/TypeScript.
• Working proficiency with frontend technologies such as React and TypeScript.
• Skilled in relational and non-relational data modeling and SQL development.
• Ability to build and support CI/CD automation (GitHub Actions).
• Experience debugging distributed production systems at scale.

Requirements

• Must be based in Colombia.
• Professional English fluency.
• Ability to work with significant overlap with US business hours.

Skills

• Client Obsessed: Keeps the client’s success front and center. Measures technical choices by their business impact.
• Clear Communicator: Collaborates effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Quality-Driven: Holds themselves to high standards for code quality and reliability.
• Ownership Mindset: Takes responsibility for delivering solutions that work in real-world conditions.
• Problem Solver: Thrive in complexity and find solutions even when requirements are evolving.

Compensation & Contract Details

• Hourly rate: $50/hr USD.
• Contract Type: Though this role is structured as a contract engagement, the scope of work is substantial and may approximate a full-time (40 hours/week) workload.
• This role requires availability during core client business hours, Monday - Friday 9 - 5 ET.
• Must have access to your own computer/device, design software, and a reliable internet connection.
