[Hiring] Associate Software Engineer @Function Health

Today - Function Health is hiring a remote Associate Software Engineer. πŸ’Έ Salary: unspecified πŸ“Location: USA, Canada

Role Description

We are seeking a curious, motivated Associate Software Engineer to join our engineering team at Function. You will help design, build, and ship software that gives our members access to their health data in real time. Function is a highly AI-native engineering environment where our engineers use AI tools every day to write, review, test, and debug code, and to move faster without lowering the bar on quality. You'll work closely with experienced engineers who will mentor you, review your code, and help you grow quickly, while you take on real, meaningful work from your first weeks.

The ideal candidate is early in their engineering career, detail-oriented, eager to learn, and energized by a fast-paced environment. You are comfortable working with a variety of AI engineering workflows and see AI as a way to multiply your impact. This role is a great fit for someone who wants to build strong engineering fundamentals while contributing to a mission that matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • AI-Native Software Development:
    • Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code for well-scoped features and bug fixes, using AI coding assistants and agentic workflows.
    • Learn our codebase and engineering standards, and contribute to scalable, secure systems under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
    • Work with teammates across engineering, product, design, and clinical teams to understand requirements, ask clarifying questions, and communicate progress and blockers clearly.
  • Project Delivery:
    • Own small to medium-sized tasks from start to finish, including planning, implementation, testing, code review, and deployment.
    • Contribute to team projects that support Function's strategic goals.
  • Technical Problem Solving:
    • Debug and resolve technical issues with support from your team.
    • Break down problems into manageable pieces, and learn to investigate root causes using logs, monitoring, testing, and AI-assisted analysis.
  • Quality and Engineering Practices:
    • Participate in code reviews, write unit and integration tests, and follow our CI/CD, Agile, and documentation practices.
    • Critically review AI-generated code for correctness, security, and maintainability before it ships, and take ownership of everything you commit.
    • Help keep our data accurate and our systems reliable.
  • AI Workflow Fluency:
    • Learn and share effective ways of working with AI, such as prompting, providing context, using coding agents, and automating repetitive tasks.
    • Help the team improve how we build with AI.
  • Learning and Growth:
    • Stay curious about new technologies and approaches.
    • Seek feedback, take on stretch work, and apply what you learn to improve our platform.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 1-2 years of professional software engineering experience (internships and co-ops included).
  • Education: Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence or Applied Mathematics.
  • Programming Fundamentals: Working proficiency in Python (or a comparable language such as Java, TypeScript, or Go), plus a solid grasp of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design.
  • AI-Native Mindset: Comfort working with a variety of AI engineering workflows, such as AI coding assistants, agentic tools, and LLM-assisted debugging, testing, and code review.
  • Engineering Basics: Familiarity with version control (Git), testing practices, and APIs and web services.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills and a knack for breaking down unfamiliar problems.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Clear written and verbal communication, and comfort working in a remote, distributed team.
  • Commitment to Learning: A growth mindset. You welcome feedback, ask good questions, and question assumptions, including the AI's.
  • Mission Alignment: Interest in using technology to improve healthcare and help people manage their health.

Nice to Have

  • Hands-on experience with tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot, or with building LLM-powered features.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS or Google Cloud) and containerization (Docker).
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies, test-driven development, or CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with SQL or relational databases.
  • Prior internship or project experience in healthcare, health data, or a startup environment.

Benefits

  • Competitive Base Salary
  • Stock options
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision plans for you and your family
  • Flexible work environment
  • Team off-sites and wellness initiatives
  • Competitive vacation policy
  • A culture that emphasizes continuous learning and personal growth
