[Hiring] Staff / Principal Product Manager, Ranking @Headway

Role Description

One million patients a month ask for a referral to a mental health provider. When they search on Headway, the order of results decides who books and who gives up. You own that order.

• Scope is patient–provider matching: retrieval and ranking systems, strategy for next steps, data strategy and platform.
• Mission: maximize successful matches - not clicks or bookings, but patients who connect with a provider, stay in care, and get better.
• Most technical PM seat in the Patient org with a ML-powered ranking stack.
• Roadmap includes learned relevance models, semantic and free-text search, and matching based on provider expertise.
• Requires a track record of identifying the right problems and convincing the organization to solve them.

Problems You'll Solve:

• Understanding what patients actually need.
• Building search that allows patients to describe their needs in their own words.
• Ranking for the relationship, not just the click.
• Ensuring every patient lands with a provider who has real experience helping similar individuals.
• Balancing marketplace health: ensuring patients receive care quickly while providers build caseloads.

You Will:

• Set the strategy for search, retrieval, and ranking, and align engineering, data science, design, clinical, and executive teams.
• Run the experimentation program end to end: hypotheses, objective functions, guardrail metrics, and honest readouts.
• Build the data, evaluation, and ML platform foundations for the next two to three years of matching work.
• Work daily with ML engineers and data scientists on model objectives, features, and evaluation.
• Carry ranking's priorities across the company, resolving competing priorities.
• Set the bar for technically grounded product work across the PM team.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of product management experience, including hands-on ownership of search, ranking, recommendations, or marketplace matching at scale.
• Experience shipping ML ranking or relevance systems to real users.
• Ability to discuss objective function design, feature development, and evaluation.
• Capability to hold architecture conversations with ML engineers and challenge modeling assumptions.
• Understanding of marketplace trade-offs and ranking's impact on opportunity allocation.
• Fluency in embeddings, semantic search, and LLM-powered products.
• Experience presenting strategy to executives and addressing challenging questions.
• Motivated by Headway's mission of making mental healthcare accessible and affordable.
