Role Description

The primary responsibility of the Professional Fee Coder is to code CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, Modifiers, Units based on medical record documentation in a remote environment. This role will focus on coding surgical procedures & E/M for multiple specialties.

Professional Fee Coders serve as a bridge between clinical care, compliance, and finance. By ensuring coding accuracy across a variety of specialties, they help maximize appropriate reimbursement, reduce financial risk, improve documentation quality, and support the organization's overall operational and financial health. Their expertise is essential for maintaining compliance while ensuring providers receive appropriate credit for the complexity and quality of care they deliver.

What You’ll Do

• Meet client expected turn-a-round times for completing work.
• Abstract all E/M, CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, modifiers, units from the medical record documentation.
• Accurately enter data into client software and/or Excel reports.
• Evaluate the overall quality of physician documentation for quality improvement measures.
• Perform accurate coding using applicable guidelines and client protocols.
• Communicate with client and/or providers as needed (i.e. coding clarification, missing documentation, etc.).
• Communicate with Project Manager as needed (i.e. schedule changes, daily assignments/work volume, coding questions, etc.).
• Track and enter time accurately and timely into our timekeeping system.
• Comply with policies regarding the use and disclosure of protected health information.
• Ensure compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, and standards related to health information and coding principles.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Must have one of the following current credentials from AAPC or AHIMA: CPC or CCS-P with a minimum of 5 years certified.
• A minimum of five years’ recent experience required abstracting CPT, E&M, HCPCS and ICD-10-CM codes from provider documentation.
• Requires knowledge in multiple surgical & E/M specialties including general surgery and plastic surgery. Cardiology, cardiothoracic, additional surgical & E/M specialties a plus.
• Extensive knowledge of medical terminology.
• Experience in researching and applying coding rules and regulations.
• Must have experience with data entry of codes into a database and/or software tool.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and various EMR (Electronic Medical Record) systems including Epic required. EMD, Touchworks, and/or RCx preferred.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
