Role Description
The Director of Veteran & Military Services is responsible for developing, coordinating, and overseeing the organization’s strategy for serving veterans, active-duty military members, service members, and military families. This position serves as the primary internal resource and external relationship leader for the military and veteran population.
The Director works closely with Business Development and Admissions to:

Ensure a seamless transition from initial referral through admission and ongoing care
Essential Duties Include:
Business Development & Strategic Partnerships

Develop and execute a comprehensive veteran and military business development strategy.

Establish and maintain relationships with:

VA outpatient clinics

VA Community Care

Behavioral health departments

MTF’s

Installation leadership

TRICARE/managed-care organizations

Veteran service organizations

-
Identify emerging referral opportunities within VA, DoD, TRICARE, and veteran-serving organizations.

Represent the organization at military, veteran, healthcare, and community events.

Develop referral pathways and strategic partnerships that increase appropriate veteran and military admissions.
Admissions Collaboration
-
Serve as the primary subject-matter resource for Admissions regarding veteran and military referrals.

Partner with Admissions to evaluate referral opportunities and identify potential barriers to admission.

Assist with eligibility, referral requirements, authorizations, benefits, and payer-specific processes.

Coordinate communication between referral sources, Admissions, clinical teams, and external stakeholders.

Support timely resolution of issues that could delay or prevent an appropriate admission.

Develop standardized workflows and resources for veteran and military referrals.

Maintain appropriate communication with referral sources throughout the admissions process.
Veteran & Military Population Advocacy

Serve as an internal advocate for the unique needs of veterans, active-duty service members, military spouses, and military families.

Educate Admissions, Business Development, clinical, and operational teams regarding military-specific systems, terminology, benefits, and referral pathways.

Monitor changes affecting veteran and military healthcare access, including VA Community Care, TRICARE, DoD behavioral health programs, and relevant federal initiatives.

Identify opportunities to improve the organization’s ability to serve this population.
Cross-Department Collaboration
-
Function as the central connection between Business Development and Admissions for veteran and military referrals.

Participate in regular meetings with BD and Admissions to review referral activity, barriers, opportunities, and trends.

Create feedback loops between referral sources and internal teams.
-
Develop clear escalation pathways for complex veteran and military cases.
Referral Development & Tracking

Track veteran and military referral activity, referral sources, admissions, conversion opportunities, and barriers.

Analyze referral trends to identify geographic, organizational, and population-specific opportunities.

Develop reporting for leadership regarding veteran and military business development activity.

Establish measurable goals related to referral growth, strategic partnerships, admissions conversion, and relationship development.

Track referrals through HSRM, TRICARE & Availity portals.
Education & Training

Develop and provide training for Admissions and Business Development staff on:

Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in behavioral health, social services, or related field.

Experience working with veterans, active-duty military, VA, DoD, TRICARE, behavioral health, substance use treatment, or business development strongly preferred.

Experience in business development, admissions, referral development, or case management.
-
Strong understanding of the VA and/or military healthcare systems.

Demonstrated ability to build relationships with senior healthcare, military, government, and community stakeholders.

Strong communication, organization, networking, and relationship-management skills.

Ability to navigate complex referral and authorization processes.

Ability to work collaboratively across multiple departments while independently managing strategic initiatives.
