Role Description
This position may be performed remotely from anywhere in the U.S.
The 2nd VP, Medical Director, will provide medical consulting services through case reviews, mortality and morbidity research, and underwriter training. The role will monitor medical literature for emerging trends, review and revise underwriting standards for life, disability, and other product lines as needed, and provide underwriting education to internal and external clients. The Medical Director will also consult with Claims, Legal, and other Munich Re US (Life) departments as needed and serve as deputy to the Chief Medical Director.

50% Case Underwriting (Life, Disability, and other product lines as required)

Review of case medical and other underwriting data to aid in assessment of risk selection for Munich Re US (Life) utilizing Munich Re US (Life) criteria along with medical judgment as well as market considerations.

Collaborate as needed with underwriters and others as indicated in preparing the decisions.

15-20% Underwriter and Physician Education

Continuous study of the aspects of insurance medicine including the fundamentals of mortality/morbidity risk assessment, insurance product design, and analysis of complex medical impairments.

Provide ongoing education to underwriters (both internal and external) utilizing innovative ways to share expertise e.g. webinars, video seminars, case clinics, individual case discussions, explanations provided in medical referrals, local group underwriter training, client visits, external industry presentations, etc.

Train and mentor new physicians in medical underwriting.

15-20% Research and Development

Assist in the development of underwriting guidelines (various product lines) for Munich Re US (Life) and client use in risk selection based on current scientific considerations, Munich Re US (Life) business plan and market considerations.

Ongoing review and revision of the underwriting manual.

Review and comment on new or updated testing technologies for use in risk assessment.

Must remain current with cutting edge medical advances and trends with ability to respond to potential impact of medical advances and the role of genetics on diagnosis and treatment of disease.

10-15% Client Relations

Respond expeditiously to client inquiries and needs with regard to proposed underwriting standards, tentative quotes, etc.

Be proactive with review and comment on emerging technologies/trends with ability to respond to potential insurance impact.

Client education/training as noted above.

Volunteer and aspire for/acquire leadership roles in the insurance industry such as AAIM, ACLI committees, MMDA, etc.

Represent Munich Re US (Life) at Industry and client meetings which may include travel, meeting attendance, meeting participation and presentations.

5% Claims Review

Assist in the review of claims (may include various product lines) regarding suitability for payment on the basis of medical criteria and contract terms.

Continuing Medical Education
-
Must maintain state MD or DO licensure and state CME requirements.

Maintain current, in-depth knowledge of medical literature via ongoing journal review, attendance at industry and non-industry medical conferences.
Qualifications

Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) degree required.

Clinical experience: 3 years minimum.

Insurance Medicine experience: 5 years minimum (Reinsurance experience preferred).

Track record of accomplishment and dedication to the Insurance Medicine industry.

Current Medical Licensure and appropriate continuing education credits as needed per year (ongoing and as may be required by law).

Board Certification β Internal Medicine or equivalent (required).

Board Certification β Insurance Medicine (required).

Professional designations such as FALU, FLMI are preferred.

Proficiency in EKG and stress test interpretation required.

Ability to embrace technology and actuarial concepts.

Morbidity Methodology training, advanced level preferred.
