Role Description
Pet Engine Marketing is looking for an experienced marketer who can become a trusted partner to our clients and a key operator inside our agency. This is not a coordinator role, and it is not a narrow channel-specialist role. You'll lead client relationships, help shape marketing strategy, manage projects and contractors, interpret performance data, and make sure good ideas actually turn into completed work.
Our clients are independent pet businesses across the U.S. and Canada, including pet retailers, groomers, trainers, boarding and daycare facilities, and other local service businesses.
What You'll Own
-
Client Leadership
-
Lead regular client meetings and become a trusted marketing advisor.
-
Understand each client's business, goals, challenges, and priorities.
-
Bring ideas to the table instead of waiting for clients or leadership to tell you what to do.
-
Manage expectations, navigate difficult conversations, and occasionally provide what could best be described as client therapy.
-
Identify opportunities to improve results or expand the relationship.
-
Marketing Strategy
-
Help diagnose where a client's marketing is working, where it is breaking down, and what should happen next.
-
Develop and refine strategies across SEO, paid advertising, websites, email/SMS, local marketing, customer retention, and other channels.
-
Connect marketing activity to actual business outcomes.
-
Understand that the right marketing recommendation depends on the business behind it, including revenue goals, capacity, budgets, seasonality, and operational constraints.
-
Push back on distractions and help clients focus on the work most likely to matter.
-
Account & Operational Ownership
-
Keep projects, campaigns, contractors, approvals, and deadlines moving.
-
Maintain organized accounts and clear next steps in ClickUp.
-
Follow through without requiring constant reminders.
-
Know how to distinguish between something that is urgent, something that is important, and something that can wait.
-
Catch problems before they become client problems.
-
Improve processes when you see a better way to do something.
-
Operate comfortably when the answer or process isn't already laid out for you.
-
Reporting & Analysis
-
Review marketing performance regularly and understand the story behind the numbers.
-
Identify trends, problems, and opportunities.
-
Translate data into clear recommendations clients can understand.
-
Work with specialists to evaluate campaign performance and determine next steps.
Qualifications
-
You don't need to be the deepest technical expert in every marketing channel. You do need enough marketing experience to understand how the pieces fit together and confidently advise clients.
-
You should be comfortable with:
-
Local and organic SEO
-
Google Business Profile
-
Google Ads and Meta Ads reporting
-
Email and SMS marketing
-
Common websites CMS and conversion optimization
-
Marketing analytics and reporting
-
Customer journeys, lead generation, retention, and conversion
-
You should be able to look at traffic, leads, rankings, ad performance, email results, bookings, revenue trends, or similar data and answer three questions:
-
What's happening?
-
Why might it be happening?
-
What should we do next?
Requirements
-
You should be highly comfortable with:
-
Google Workspace
-
ClickUp or similar project management software
-
ChatGPT and AI tools for research, analysis, planning, writing, and improving workflows
-
You should also know your way around tools such as:
-
Google Analytics 4
-
Google Search Console
-
Google Business Profile
-
Klaviyo, Mailchimp, or similar email platforms
-
Google Ads and Meta Ads reporting
-
Website CMS platforms
-
Marketing dashboards and reporting tools
-
Specific platform expertise matters less than being able to learn quickly and work independently.
Benefits
-
You're probably a strong fit if you:
-
Have several years of hands-on marketing experience and have managed client relationships, preferably in an agency, consulting, or similar environment.
-
Can confidently lead conversations with business owners and communicate clearly in writing.
-
Think strategically, understand the business behind the marketing, and can turn ideas into action.
-
Are highly organized, accountable, and able to prioritize without escalating every decision.
-
Can manage multiple clients, contractors, and competing priorities without losing the thread.
-
Are curious, adaptable, and comfortable figuring things out when there isn't a perfect playbook.
-
An entrepreneurial mindset matters here. If you've run your own business, freelanced, consulted, built a side business, or otherwise had to make decisions and create momentum without someone constantly telling you what to do, we want to hear about it.
-
Experience working with local businesses, retail, service businesses, or the pet industry is also a plus.
-
As Pet Engine grows, this role has the potential to take on increasing leadership responsibility, including helping develop and manage additional members of the account team.
