Role Description

The Finance Department is responsible for all financial and accounting matters for Amnesty International USA. The Director, Accounting and Finance (“Director”) is responsible for directing the organization’s accounting functions and professional operations of the Finance unit. This position works with the Chief Financial Officer ("CFO") and manages the general accounting functions, including the records and operation of accounting systems and the gathering and reporting of financial information. This is a great opportunity for a finance and operations leader to maximize and strengthen the internal capacity of a well-respected, human rights organization. This position handles confidential and sensitive matters and is not covered under the collective bargaining agreement.

Essential Responsibilities

• Financial Operations Management
  • Supervise the organization's accounting function, ensuring accurate and compliant financial record-keeping.
  • Oversee and manage core accounting functions, including cash management and accounts payable.
  • Review and approve financial transactions, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll, general ledger entries, depreciation, accruals, prepaid, asset purchases, and other complex transactions.
  • Manage the monthly closing process to ensure all tasks are performed accurately within a set timeframe.
  • Oversee online banking treasury functions and cash management utilizing secure web-based platforms and reporting systems.
  • Direct and plan the preparation of annual fiscal records and interim monthly financial reports.
  • Prepare/review audit work papers and financial statements annually and correspond with auditors as needed.
  • Contribute to preparing the IRS Form 990, IRS Form 5500, and ensure compliance with tax regulations and registrations.
  • Assist with regulatory filings e.g., lobby filings, 1099’s, information for state filings and compliance, and U.S Census Bureau quarterly and annual filings.
  • Assist with insurance renewals.
• Systems Optimization
  • Evaluate and optimize the performance of accounting and related systems.
  • Analyze financial systems and recommend automated or streamlined business processes.
• Communications, Collaboration and External Partners
  • Advise departmental program and development officials on accounting matters.
  • Ensure finance successfully integrates work output/services with other internal departments.
  • Communicate and coordinate with members, vendors, donors, and bankers as appropriate.
  • Coordinate accounting software updates with IT as necessary.
  • Represent and act on behalf of the department or function when making decisions daily.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience with leading month-end and year-end close, general ledger, financial reporting, external audits, grants, restricted funds, and donor compliance.
• Knowledge of relevant tax and financial reporting regulations.
• Ability to develop, manage and analyze budgets.
• Proficiency in creating long-term financial forecasts.
• Ability to maintain deep understanding of AIUSA's business while setting communication priorities for cross-functional initiatives.
• Ability to translate financial concepts to colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds.
• Excellent organizational skills with an accountant’s attention to detail.
• Excellent communicator with strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
• Excellent team, project and budget management skills.
• Proven ability to embed inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) best practices into both strategy and operations.
• Experience supporting the professional development of staff members.

Requirements

• BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, or related degree and at least 10 years relevant experience or MBA/MA/MS in Accounting or Finance and 8 years relevant experience.
• Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
• Experience leading the audit and budget processes for a non-profit preferred.
• Knowledge of relevant financial reporting software at an intermediate to expert level.
• Strong understanding of US GAAP and financial reporting.
• Expert level MS Excel skills and intermediate level skills on all other MS Office applications.
• Analytic and decisive decision maker with the ability to prioritize and communicate key objectives.
