[Hiring] Senior Protection and Control Application Engineer @Cynet Systems

Role Description

The Grid Test Bay Application Engineer is responsible for programming, testing, and commissioning protection and control panels for generator protection, generator excitation, transformer protection, feeder protection, bus protection, and line protection systems.

• Analyzing customer applications and specifications to understand the design of protection and control panels, single line diagrams, schematic diagrams, logic diagrams, control diagrams, Bills of Materials, engineering instructions, wiring drawings, wire lists, and wire tags to fulfill user specifications and requirements.
• Preparing test plans customized to ensure that multi-function protection relays behave appropriately to protect the power system in which they are installed.
• Creating relay setting files based on logic diagrams and settings included in coordination and protection study reports.
• Uploading setting files and setting up communication systems, including IEC 61850.
• Executing test plans using secondary injection tests and simulating complex control schemes such as transfer schemes, synchronizing schemes, and auto-restoration schemes based on logic diagrams.
• Taking full responsibility for assigned projects with minor support from the Senior Lead Application Engineer.
• Testing customized protection and control solutions both in-house and at customer installations.
• Providing field support up to and including commissioning of new applications.
• Providing training, peer checks, and design support to other members of the team.

Qualifications

• University degree or college diploma in Electrical Engineering.
• 7+ years of working experience in relay testing and creation of setting files for multi-function relays.
• Strong knowledge of power systems, protection schemes, and communication applications.
• Experience in creating test procedures and maintenance procedures related to factory and site testing and commissioning of protection panels.
• Experience in programming protection relays, specifically utility-grade relay families.
• Excellent understanding of theoretical bases for all major protection principles including distance, line differential, transformer differential, bus, feeder, generator, and large motor protection.
• Demonstrated ability as a team player, showing initiative to take the lead and mentor other team members.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work in a multicultural environment.

Requirements

• Experience in turnkey protection and control projects.
• Demonstrated record in developing protection and control applications.
• Working knowledge of major test sets and short-circuit/setting coordination software.
• Working knowledge of RTDS, ASPEN, EMTP, SKM, ETAP, and MATLAB.
• Familiarity with standard work and documentation procedures of electrical utilities.
• Interdisciplinary experience including metering, communications, substation automation, and integration.
• Knowledge and experience with digital energy and third-party protection relay products.
• Lean/Six Sigma Green Belt or XX Belt certification preferred.
• P.Eng certification is an asset.
