[Hiring] Senior Engineering Manager @OpenLoop Health

Role Description

OpenLoop is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager to build and lead our Applied AI team, responsible for shipping LLM-based agents and assistants used by our operations, clinical, and patient-facing teams.

• Build & Lead the Team: Hire, onboard, and develop a team of Applied AI Engineers across Senior, Staff, and Senior Staff levels, expanding from a single pod into multiple teams.
• Own Delivery of Production Agents: Drive the roadmap and execution of LLM-based agents and assistants from scoping to launch to ongoing operation.
• Set the Technical Bar: Partner with Staff+ engineers on architecture for agent runtime and orchestration, making trade-off decisions as needed.
• Evaluation as a Standard: Implement evaluation sets, regression tests, and AI-graded evaluations to ensure improvement and catch regressions early.
• Reliability, Cost & Operations: Manage the operational health of AI systems in production, including on-call, incident response, model version upgrades, and AI spend.
• Security, Privacy & Safety: Ensure AI systems protect patient data, follow least-privilege access, and comply with HIPAA requirements.
• Workflow & Use Case Prioritization: Collaborate with Product and Operations leaders to identify where agents can take over human workflows.
• Cross-functional Leadership: Communicate AI capabilities, risks, and timelines to stakeholders in understandable terms.
• Team Health & Process: Facilitate planning, prioritization, and delivery rituals to maintain team efficiency and morale.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years managing engineers directly.
• Experience leading or building LLM-based systems in production.
• Experience managing senior and Staff-level engineers.
• Hands-on understanding of agent runtime, evaluation, retrieval, and observability.
• Ability to measure AI system performance with evaluation data.
• Strong grounding in production engineering across testing, services, APIs, deployment, incident management, and on-call.
• Experience leading teams handling sensitive data with a security-first mindset.
• Comfort building in a greenfield space and clear communication with technical and non-technical partners.

Requirements

• Regulated-Industry Experience: Healthcare (PHI, HIPAA), finance, or insurance.
• GCP Experience: Leading teams running production services on Google Cloud.
• Scaling Teams: Experience growing an engineering team from zero or from one team to several.
• Model Operations: Experience leading migrations between model versions or providers.
• Classic ML Background: Machine learning experience beyond LLMs.
• Internal Platforms: Experience leading a platform used by other engineering teams.
