Role Description

Lighters are responsible for adding lighting to games that create atmosphere and add realism, tone, and depth to a scene. They emphasize drama or narrative and establish and clarify location, weather, time of day, etc. Lighters ensure consistency in lighting, color balance, and mood between the various elements of a shot or scene in the game.

You will need to use your technical skill as well as your aesthetic judgment to create images that not only look good but are easy to render. You must be able to refer to the relevant production designs and apply that visual style as faithfully as possible, taking care to maintain continuity throughout the scene and game.

Responsibilities

• Understanding of Unity rendering pipeline and lighting setups, shading.
• Sets up scene lights to match color keys and concept art, with an understanding of lighting aesthetics to keep the artistic style consistent with the defined visual style for the game.
• Create and maintain all elements of lighting i.e. dynamic, prebaked, interior and exterior setups.
• Maintain a balance between visual quality and performance requirements for real-time game application.
• Participate in R&D of new techniques to implement into a production pipeline.
• Pipeline development and technical guides creation.
• Work with art leads and designers to create compelling lighting for a variety of environments while maintaining a consistent style throughout the game.

Requirements

• A minimum of 3 years of game development experience, lighting a variety of in-game environments.
• A portfolio or demo reel that demonstrates a keen eye for detail and the ability to use light, shadow, and color to create a variety of tones and moods.
• Thorough understanding of real-time lighting techniques.
• Self-motivation, good communication skills, and a great team player.
• Experience working with Unity Engine.
• Had worked through an entire production cycle and had previously shipped AAA PC or console titles in a similar role.
• Good attitude for troubleshooting technical issues associated with lighting, performance, tools, and pipelines.
• Willing to learn new pipelines and techniques in Unreal and other custom engines.

Pluses

• Familiar with 3ds Max, Maya, Photoshop, and 3rd party lighting tools.
• Understands source control with Perforce, SVN, or the equivalent.
• Understanding of Unreal rendering pipelines (or any other custom engine).
• Experience in a full pipeline development of 3D art from concept to integration into the engine.
• Passionate gamer with experience playing a wide range of video games.
