[Hiring] Fire Inspector I @Prince George's County Government

Role Description

Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department is seeking a Fire Inspector I to support operations within the Office of Fire Investigations. This is an entry-level technical fire inspection and fire code enforcement position designed to ensure compliance with County and State fire codes and laws.

• Read and interpret approved engineering plans and specification sheets for construction of buildings, fire extinguishing systems, fire alarm systems, and fire related assemblies.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, owners, engineers, and the general public.
• Achieve competency in interpreting and explaining fire codes and issuing violation notices.
• Attempt to obtain voluntary compliance to correct fire and life safety deficiencies.
• Prepare written correspondence and reports.
• Gather evidence to prepare cases for administrative appeal and/or Court.
• Upon successful completion of the probation period and obtaining a Fire Inspector I rating (NFPA 1031 Standards), may be promoted to Fire Inspector II at management's discretion.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• One year of experience in fire prevention, fire suppression, building inspections, code enforcement, or a closely related field.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to obtain required Fire Inspector certification within 18 months.

Requirements

• Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
• Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.
• Successfully pass public safety preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings.
• Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee.
• This position is essential; employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies.
