Role Description

The Director of Volunteer Programs is a strategic leader overseeing the design, implementation, growth, and continuous evolution of programs that connect and activate volunteers, patients, survivors, caregivers, and advocates around the Alliance’s mission. This role develops strategies that deepen engagement, build community, grow the volunteer base, expand mission participation, and create opportunities to support fundraising and organizational growth.

The Director establishes the systems and operational excellence needed to support enterprise-wide volunteer programs, including the Ambassador and Peer Support Programs, while identifying new ways to mobilize the Alliance community through volunteerism, advocacy, awareness, events, peer-to-peer engagement, and fundraising.

Working collaboratively across the organization, the Director fosters meaningful volunteer experiences, builds sustainable program infrastructure, and cultivates engaged champions who expand the Alliance’s reach and advance its strategic priorities and long-term impact.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, public health, social work, psychology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 8 - 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in program development, volunteer engagement, community engagement, nonprofit management, healthcare, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated success designing, implementing, scaling and leading complex, national programs or initiatives from concept through implementation.
  • Experience developing and managing operational infrastructure, including policies, procedures, workflows, quality assurance and evaluation processes.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence stakeholders without direct authority and build collaborative partnerships.
  • Experience developing and executing strategic plans, implementation roadmaps, budgets, performance metrics, and evaluation frameworks.
  • Strong program, project and change management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills, including experience communicating recommendations and outcomes to senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and creating welcoming, accessible, and participant-centered experiences.

Requirements

  • Drive continuous improvement and program expansion through data analysis, participant feedback, and performance measurements that enhance program effectiveness and organizational impact.
  • Identify, develop, and implement strategies to expand program reach, strengthen volunteer engagement, improve scalability, and support the long-term sustainability of the Alliance’s volunteer programs.
  • Identify and advance opportunities to leverage volunteer programs, partnerships, and community engagement to increase fundraising, cultivate prospective donors and sponsors to support the Alliance’s mission.
  • Monitor key performance indicators and develop executive-level reporting that communicates program outcomes, trends, and strategic value.
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with community organizations, healthcare partners, professional associations, and other stakeholders to strengthen volunteer engagement, increase program visibility, and advance the Alliance's mission.
