Role Description

The Director of Environmental Compliance will lead environmental compliance, air permitting, and environmental remediation activities across North America. This role is responsible for managing complex regulatory obligations, active remediation matters, permitting requirements, consultants, budgets, and agency interactions.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Lead environmental remediation programs under CERCLA, RCRA, state programs, and Canadian provincial requirements for a portfolio of 30+ sites in various stages of investigation and remediation.
  • Manage external consultants, remediation budgets, work plans, reporting obligations, and regulatory negotiations for soil, groundwater, and vapor intrusion matters.
  • Lead air permitting activities, including state and provincial permits, permit renewals, compliance reporting, and operational support for capital projects.
  • Maintain and strengthen corporate environmental compliance standards, audit processes, governance frameworks, and internal reporting practices.
  • Monitor regulatory developments involving air emissions, greenhouse gases, PFAS, vapor intrusion, and related environmental obligations, and develop proactive compliance strategies.
  • Partner with Legal, Operations, Engineering, Real Estate, and site leadership to assess environmental risks and support practical compliance solutions.
  • Support transition planning by working closely with the current director to capture permitting history, site-specific remediation strategy, regulatory relationships, and other institutional knowledge.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to manage consultants, budgets, regulatory negotiations, and complex technical projects.
  • Strong business judgment, communication skills, and ability to translate technical environmental issues into practical operational and executive-level recommendations.
  • Practical, solutions-oriented judgment with the ability to balance regulatory requirements, operational realities, and business priorities.
  • Strong executive presence and ability to communicate complex environmental matters clearly to senior leaders, site teams, regulators, and outside advisors.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the discipline to manage multiple sites, deadlines, permits, consultants, and regulatory commitments simultaneously.
  • Collaborative and credible partner to Legal, Operations, Engineering, Real Estate, and site leadership.
  • Proactive risk manager who anticipates regulatory developments, identifies emerging environmental risks, and drives timely follow-through.

Experience/Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, geology, chemistry, or a related technical discipline required; advanced degree or professional certification preferred.
  • Significant experience managing environmental remediation, air permitting, and regulatory compliance programs in a multi-site operating environment.
  • Working knowledge of CERCLA, RCRA, state environmental programs, Canadian provincial requirements, air permitting, emissions reporting, and related environmental compliance obligations.
