[Hiring] Building Performance Technical Lead @Legence

YDay - Legence is hiring a remote Building Performance Technical Lead. πŸ’Έ Salary: usd 90,000 - 115,000 per year πŸ“Location: USA

Role Description

The Technical Lead, Building Performance owns assigned building-performance engagements or technical workstreams for commercial real estate clients. The role combines field-based technical work, analysis, reporting, and asset-level client coordination across services such as:

  • Building assessments
  • Environmental testing
  • Energy audits
  • Retrocommissioning
  • Data verification
  • Certification-related technical support
  • Implementation oversight on behalf of building owners

The role works closely with teams across the business and may lead a standalone engagement, serve as project manager for assigned work, or own a defined technical scope within a broader engagement led by another RE Tech team.

Where certification programs require separation between certification management and assessment functions, the role serves as the assessor or technical contributor rather than the end-to-end certification manager.

The role independently executes work within established methodologies and quality standards. Final technical authority, methodology approval, and disposition of complex or disputed matters remain with the appropriate Director/Sr Director or designated senior technical reviewer.

Qualifications

  • Strong working knowledge of commercial building systems and building-performance evaluation methods, including energy auditing, retrocommissioning, indoor environmental quality, environmental testing, data verification, and green building certification requirements.
  • Ability to interpret building documentation, operational and performance data, field observations, testing results, and other technical information to develop practical, technically supportable findings and recommendations.
  • Ability to independently plan and conduct field investigations and technical assessments within established methodologies, scope, and quality requirements.
  • Strong project-management, organization, technical writing, and stakeholder-coordination skills.
  • Ability to identify and proactively manage delivery risks, dependencies, and issues within assigned work.
  • Ability to coordinate work across contributors and stakeholders, establish clear expectations and handoffs, and maintain accountability for quality, schedule, and assigned scope.
  • Ability to provide practical technical guidance, review, and coaching to other team members.
  • Sound professional judgment, ethics, and attention to detail.

Requirements

  • Relevant education, technical training, professional certifications, and/or demonstrated experience in building performance, facility operations, sustainability, commissioning, controls, HVAC operations, energy auditing, environmental testing, building science, engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Equivalent professional experience may substitute for formal education requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience performing building assessments, energy audits, certification-related fieldwork, environmental testing, commissioning, retrocommissioning, or similar technical services.
  • Demonstrated experience independently coordinating technical assignments, deliverables, stakeholders, and deadlines.
  • Experience working directly with commercial buildings, facilities teams, property management teams, or real estate clients.

Preferred Qualifications

  • BREEAM In-Use Assessor credential or experience supporting BREEAM assessments.
  • LEED AP, WELL AP, Fitwel, CEM, CEA, BEAP, commissioning, indoor environmental quality, or similar credential or training.
  • Experience performing or supporting energy audits, including ASHRAE Level I or Level II audits, and/or commissioning or retro-commissioning studies.
  • Experience with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.
  • Familiarity with building-performance regulations, standards, and certification frameworks.
  • Experience working with institutional real estate owners, operators, real estate investment trusts, investment managers, or third-party property-management firms.

Travel, Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Frequent domestic travel to client sites and commercial properties is required.
  • Regular work occurs in occupied and unoccupied buildings, including mechanical rooms, rooftops, equipment spaces, and other operational areas.
  • The role may require extended walking and standing; use of stairs and ladders where permitted; and work in noisy, hot, cold, dusty, poorly lit, or constrained spaces.
  • The role requires operation and transport of testing equipment, monitoring devices, laptops, tablets, and required personal protective equipment.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of equipment weighing up to [confirm weight] pounds may be required.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Benefits

  • Health & Welfare Benefits: Employer provided medical, dental, vision, prescription drug, Employee Assistance Program and accident & illness coverage.
  • Life and Disability Insurance: Employer provided basic life insurance and AD&D valued at 50K coverage amount with the option for voluntary buy up for additional coverage.
