Role Description

This role involves accurately assigning diagnosis and procedure codes for various medical services.

Assigns codes for Day Surgery, Dental surgical procedures, Observation, Emergency Department (ED), outpatient ERSA, outpatient procedures, and outpatient specialty encounters.
Codes records with correct Ambulatory Payment Classifications (APCs) and Relative Value Units (RVUs) for reimbursement.
Performs necessary tasks within MHS GENESIS® and other military coding systems (e.g., 3M Encompass 360, Joint Legacy Viewer (JLV)).
Researches and resolves coding edit failures as assigned.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent.
4 years of experience in medical coding and/or auditing in two or more medical, surgical, and ancillary specialties OR 2 years of experience in a Medical Treatment Facility.
CCS, CPC, RHIT, or RHIA Certification.
Must be a US Citizen.

Requirements

Knowledge of the International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-CM), and Procedural Coding System (PCS).
Familiarity with Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT).
Practical knowledge of medical specialties, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and ancillary services (e.g., Laboratory, Dental, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Radiology).
Understanding of revenue cycle management concepts related to medical coding.
Knowledge of reimbursement systems, including Prospective Payment System (PPS) and Diagnostic Related Groupings (DRGs).
Advanced knowledge of industry nomenclature, medical and procedural terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and disease processes.
Practical knowledge of clinical documentation improvement and continuous process improvement processes.
Practical knowledge of EHR systems and workflows pertaining to medical coding.
Associate's degree (preferred).
