Role Description

This role involves accurately assigning diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient facility and professional services.

Assigns codes for inpatient stays, surgical procedures, dental surgical procedures, anesthesia services, and ancillary services.
Ensures correct assignment of DRGs for inpatient stays.
Codes inpatient discharge records with correct and optimal DRG assignment, Relative Weighted Product (RWP), and Relative Value Units (RVUs).
Performs necessary tasks within MHS GENESIS and other military coding systems (e.g., 3M Encompass 360, Joint Legacy Viewer (JLV)).
May assist with ambulatory and outpatient coding.
Researches and resolves coding edit failures as assigned.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent.
5 years of experience in medical coding and/or auditing in two or more medical, surgical, and ancillary specialties OR 3 years of experience in a Medical Treatment Facility.
RHIT or RHIA Certification.
Must be a US Citizen.

Requirements

Knowledge of the International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-CM), and Procedural Coding System (PCS).
Knowledge of Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT).
Knowledge of reimbursement systems, including Prospective Payment System (PPS) and Diagnostic Related Groupings (DRGs).
Practical knowledge of EHR systems and workflows pertaining to medical coding.
Practical knowledge of clinical documentation improvement and continuous process improvement processes.
Knowledge of Ambulatory Payment Classifications (APCs) and Resource-Based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS).
Advanced knowledge and understanding of industry nomenclature, medical and procedural terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and disease processes.
Practical knowledge of medical specialties, medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ancillary services, and revenue cycle management concepts related to medical coding.
Experience working in systems such as EPIC, Cerner, Next Gen, Allscripts, or any other EHR.
Associates Degree.
