Role Description

We are seeking a HAZMAT-certified Senior Technical Writer to lead a branch team supporting the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Global Supply Engineering Division. The Senior Technical Writer creates and maintains Item Purchase Descriptions (IPDs) and National Stock Number (NSN) records used to buy products for federal and military customers. This role also serves as the branch's hazardous materials subject matter expert.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day IPD production for the assigned branch, including prioritizing requests, tracking due dates, and reviewing team output before release.
• Create and update IPDs through product and market research, covering salient characteristics, performance standards, packaging, marking, labeling, and palletization requirements.
• Evaluate hazardous products for transportation in accordance with 49 CFR, the IMDG Code, and IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, and assign Dangerous Article Codes (DAC).
• Evaluate Safety Data Sheets (SDS) against current standards and submit them to the Hazardous Materials Information Resource System (HMIRS) when required.
• Validate product data across FLIS, PICS, and GSA Advantage, and submit cataloging requests (NCAL) to correct discrepancies.
• Identify and apply the latest published editions of applicable standards (ASME, ASTM, ANSI, SAE, FED-STD, MIL-STD, CID).
• Review products against California Air Resources Board and other federal and state regulatory restrictions.
• Evaluate supplier requests to deviate from or waive specifications, and provide technical recommendations.
• Contribute branch data to monthly progress reports and provide technical support to GSA engineers.

Qualifications

• Current HAZMAT certification per 49 CFR, IMDG, and IATA (documentation required).
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in technical writing or engineering support.
• Experience writing product specifications, purchase descriptions, or comparable technical documentation.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to work core hours of 9:00 AM-2:30 PM in the assigned branch's time zone.

Preferred Qualifications

• Federal cataloging experience (NSN, FLIS, NCAL, CAGE codes, DLA or GSA supply).
• Experience with TIMS, EDMS, PICS, GSA Advantage, or HMIRS.
• Product knowledge in chemicals, cleaning products, hardware, or office products.
• Team lead experience.
