Role Description
As a Lead Storyteller, you'll lead a team of 8 to 10 storytellers, review every story they create, and make sure only great stories reach an audience. Your job is to make the fundamental laws of storytelling land and ensure they are applied effectively.
Your role involves:
-
Scaling what makes a story great, not your own personal taste.
-
Reviewing stories objectively and providing clear feedback.
-
Spending 70 to 80 percent of your time on reviewing stories and training your team.
-
Creating your own stories to maintain your touch and build trust with your team.
Responsibilities
-
Enforce the laws: Hold every story to the laws of storytelling, ensuring your own taste does not influence decisions.
-
Review every story: Read everything your team creates daily and decide if it's ready for an audience.
-
Give feedback that teaches: Explain what isn't working and how changes can strengthen the story.
-
Make your storytellers better: Train each person on the laws and encourage them to step out of their comfort zones.
-
Keep great stories moving: Ensure enough stories are published consistently and push stories toward their best versions.
-
Study what works: Analyze audience reactions to improve storytelling lessons for the company.
-
Push the laws forward: Bring up gaps in the laws with supporting stories.
-
Build the training: Create guides to help storytellers apply the laws effectively.
-
Keep creating: Continue telling your own stories to retain your storytelling skills.
-
Look after your team: Onboard new storytellers and mentor potential successors.
Requirements
-
A storyteller first, capable of leading your team.
-
Able to explain why a story works, not just feel it.
-
Objective: Able to pass a story you dislike if it meets storytelling standards.
-
Direct: Provide honest and specific feedback.
-
A teacher at heart: Prefer teaching from mistakes rather than fixing them quietly.
-
All in: This role is your main focus.
-
Fast: Ability to connect insights across stories quickly.
What this role isn't for you if:
-
You just want to get paid to do a job.
-
You judge stories by personal preference.
-
You prefer to impose your own rules rather than improve the existing laws.
-
You prioritize being the best storyteller over developing your team.
-
You prefer to fix stories yourself instead of teaching others.
-
You hold back hard feedback to avoid upsetting anyone.
-
You dismiss ideas as bad without consideration.
-
You focus more on hours worked than team output.
-
You want AI to handle the creative work.
Results
-
Your storytellers improve every month, demonstrating growth.
-
Your storytellers become increasingly independent.
-
Every story from your team adheres to the laws and is delivered promptly.
-
Your team requires less feedback over time as training addresses common issues.
-
Insights gained sharpen the laws for the entire company.
-
A team member is prepared to take your position.
Schedule
We are an output company, not an hours company, so there are no hour requirements. The work is daily: stories come in every day, and your team counts on fast, clear feedback.
