[Hiring] Internal Tooling Engineer @Relay (Uneven Labs, Inc.)

Role Description

We're hiring an Internal Tooling Engineer with one goal: make every Relay engineer a lot more productive.

• Work "inside the box" with our own engineers as customers.
• Focus on improving productivity by identifying bottlenecks and inefficiencies.
• This is an individual contributor, hands-on backend engineering role.
• Write code daily, deploy it, and run it in production.
• Build services and integrations, instrument them, set up monitoring and alerts, and be on call for what you ship.
• No team to manage; this role is not for those who want to lead people or mostly advise.

Qualifications

• Hands-on backend engineering experience: build, deploy, and maintain production services.
• 5+ years in software engineering, developer tooling, or platform engineering.
• Strong TypeScript and experience building internal tools and API integrations.
• Production experience with LLM agents: tool use, retrieval, orchestration, and evals for nondeterministic behavior.
• Experience bringing AI-assisted code review or testing into a team's daily workflow.
• Working knowledge of CI/CD and code review systems.
• Experience with observability tools such as Datadog.
• Strong written communication skills.

Requirements

• Obsessed with cycle time; notice every minute someone waits.
• Heavy user of AI coding agents with knowledge of their reliability.
• Preference for adding tests, guardrails, or lint rules over relying on prompts.
• Comfortable being the first dedicated hire in a new function.
• Ability to build feedback loops: measure before and after, learn from misses, iterate, and report honestly.

What success looks like

• First 30 days: Shadowed engineers across teams, mapped where time is lost, and agreed on a baseline for cycle time and review wait.
• First 60 days: Agent review covers a first set of repositories with clear rules for merges and a feedback loop capturing every override and miss.
• First 90 days: Median wait for a first review measured in minutes, tracking false-positive and false-negative rates, and a Datadog-backed debugging flow in daily use.
• Ongoing: Engineers ship visibly faster, and the review agent keeps improving.
