Smartling is looking for a creative and passionate Senior Java Developer to join our team. You’ll be part of the team building and maintaining a cutting-edge translation management application that allows our clients and professional translators to manage the localization process for their websites and documents agilely. Our rapidly growing client list includes top names from the technology and Fortune 500 worlds.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Development, or related field
- 6+ years of hands-on Java development experience
- Proficiency in designing and building APIs using HTTP and REST
- Strong knowledge of relational databases
- Experience with AWS, Linux, and server-side development
- Understanding of distributed computing principles and algorithms
- Familiarity with asynchronous patterns and messaging technologies
- Expertise in Design Patterns for scalable, stable systems
- Open to adopting modern approaches to efficient development, including AI tools
- Upper-Intermediate spoken English for occasional client discussions and troubleshooting
Nice to Have
- Experience with Python and other scripts
- Familiarity with NoSQL databases, large datasets, or cloud storage like Amazon S3
- Knowledge of NodeJS, React, or Redux – or willingness to learn, as backend and frontend are tightly integrated
- Experience with headless browsers for rendering and automation
Expected Workload
- Full time. We will help with the initial setup and domain knowledge.

Tasks Overview
- Develop and maintain efficient, scalable code and infrastructure capable of handling thousands of operations per second
- Innovate and implement new features that elevate user experience and satisfaction
- Monitor and analyze application metrics, responding promptly to alerts to ensure high availability and performance
- Fine-tune services and databases for optimal cost-efficiency and ease of maintenance
- Perform in-depth architecture and code reviews to uphold the highest standards of quality and engineering excellence
- Continuously improve technologies, ensuring robust security, streamlined deployments, and adoption of the latest advancement
Key Projects
- Visual Contexts: Enhance services to provide visual contexts for translations, integrating videos, images, documents, and web pages with features like OCR, server-side HTML rendering, and file format conversion.
- AI and Prompt Engineering: Build and enhance a dedicated LLM service to simplify AI feature integration across Smartling’s platform. This project includes writing and testing prompts, supporting multiple LLM providers, and developing robust APIs to bring AI-powered localization and automation features into all platform components.
- API Gateway: As the core of Smartling’s API ecosystem, the API Gateway handles all incoming requests with efficient routing, rate limiting, monitoring, and validation. This service is vital for ensuring stability, reliability, and high performance in all conditions.

- Databases: MySQL, RabbitMQ, Redis
- Cloud and Infrastructure: AWS (EC2, ECS, S3, RDS, Lambda), Linux, Terraform, Docker
