Role Description

This position is a key leader in managing the enterprise-wide planning and governance processes to ensure strategic alignment, operational consistency, and the smooth flow of initiatives through the organization. This role acts as the gatekeeper of the enterprise planning chassis, enforcing standards and policies to maintain the health, integrity, and fidelity of the enterprise portfolio.

As the conduit for escalating risks or issues, the Portfolio Planning Consultant ensures that unresolved enterprise-level dependencies, systemic risks, and bottlenecks raised by localized planning teams are properly documented, vetted, and brought to the Enterprise Business Council with actionable insights and recommendations. This role serves as the primary liaison between localized planning teams and the enterprise-level planning structures.

They ensure that work flows seamlessly across the enterprise by enforcing process standards, addressing systemic execution risks, and maintaining alignment with the enterprise planning frameworks.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Standards Enforcement:
    • Policy Gatekeeping: Ensure compliance with enterprise governance policies, including WIP management, prioritization, and initiative readiness standards.
    • Threshold Adherence: Enforce planning threshold and intake requirements, ensuring initiatives meet maturity criteria before progressing in the enterprise planning process.
    • Standards Alignment: Maintain and enforce enterprise-wide planning standards, providing clarity and consistency across business areas.
  • Enterprise Roadmap Integration and Risk Monitoring:
    • Portfolio Inputs: Facilitate the integration of initiative-level plans into the enterprise portfolio roadmap, ensuring high quality data.
    • Dependency Tracking: Document cross-initiative dependencies and potential risks, escalating unresolved issues as necessary.
    • Risk Monitoring: Monitor systemic execution risks that could impact enterprise initiative flow and escalate unresolved issues to the appropriate forums.
  • Liaison to the Enterprise Planning Framework:
    • Point of Contact: Act as a trusted advisor for business leaders navigating enterprise planning processes and standards.
    • Process Advocacy: Represent the enterprise planning chassis and advocate adherence to policies within business areas.
    • Health assessment: Evaluate process maturity at the business area level, recommending improvements and identifying opportunities for process coaching engagements if necessary.
  • Conduit for Escalation:
    • Escalation Pathway: Serve as the liaison between localized planning teams and the enterprise business council, ensuring systemic execution risks, unresolved dependencies, or enterprise-wide issues are properly escalated.
    • Quality Control: Ensure high-quality, actionable insights are prepared for the enterprise business council, including clear documentation, trade-offs, and potential solutions.
  • Provide support to director in enterprise planning, prioritization, and decision making:
    • Facilitate enterprise planning rituals.
    • Develop communications and content to enable effective decision-making by enterprise-level planning structures.
    • Provide input to process improvements and tool refinement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Project Management, Operations, or a related field (required).
  • 7+ years of experience in portfolio or program management, enterprise planning, or process improvement in a matrixed organizational environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating cross-functional collaboration, managing systemic risks, and working with planning frameworks (e.g. OKRs, agile, or flow-based approaches).
  • Proven track record in process adherence and enforcement to drive alignment at an enterprise level.
  • Expertise in enterprise planning processes and frameworks.
  • Strong knowledge of portfolio management practices including dependency identification, sequencing, and prioritization of efforts.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills, including the ability to liaise effectively between local teams and enterprise leaders.
  • Proficient in risk identification, analysis, and escalation frameworks.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to synthesize data from multiple sources into actionable insights.
