Role Description
The Senior Director, Shelter Medicine works within the Shelter Medicine Service (SMS) team to provide shelter medicine expertise within the ASPCA and externally to veterinarians, shelters & rescues, and other stakeholders. This person provides mentorship and training and engages in extensive collaboration with different subject matter experts across programs and organizations.

Support sheltering organizations by providing training, educational resources, and direct consultative work.

Provide subject matter expertise on a variety of shelter medicine topics.

Mentor shelter medicine residents and practitioners.

Contribute to the growth of the field by serving in leadership positions in strategic veterinary medical and animal welfare organizations.

Report directly to the VP, Shelter Medicine Services and Veterinary Training Programs.
Qualifications

High level of knowledge and experience in shelter medicine practice and companion animal population health required.

Current veterinary license in one or more states required.

Strong organizational, analytical, writing, and presentation skills.

Requirements

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary college required.

Minimum of five years of veterinary experience required.

Minimum of three years of shelter medicine experience required.

Board certification in Shelter Medicine Practice preferred.

Fear Free Shelter and Fear Free Veterinary certification required within 60 days of hire.
