Role Description

The Inpatient Coding Specialist – IRF works remotely to code IRF records using the current ICD coding version and within the timeframe set by the supervisor. Responsibilities include:

• Maintaining coding schedule as assigned by the Area Director.
• Working closely with the PPS Coordinator/Outcomes Manager in assigning the Impairment Code for all admissions and newly diagnosed conditions.
• Serving as back-up for the hospital to transmit IRF PAIs in a timely manner for all Medicare inpatients.
• Maintaining confidentiality of all patient care information to ensure patient rights are protected.
• Participating in continuing education classes and training programs.
• Completing annual health, safety, and education requirements while maintaining professional growth and development.
• Demonstrating knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and providing age-appropriate care to the patient population served.
• Reporting to work on time as scheduled and adhering to policies regarding notification of absence.
• Attending all mandatory in-services and staff calls.
• Representing the organization in a positive and professional manner.
• Complying with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
• Working within the mission, vision, ethics, and goals of the organization.
• Maintaining current licensure/certification for the position, if applicable.
• Consistently demonstrating Guest Relations skills to physicians, hospital employees, and other individuals.
• Following organizational and hospital Health, Safety, Security, and Hazardous Materials policies and procedures.
• Conducting job responsibilities in accordance with HIPAA privacy laws and reporting any patient confidentiality issues to the supervisor.
• Conducting job responsibilities in accordance with standards set forth in LifePoint’s Code of Conduct, policies, and applicable laws.
• Communicating effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Possessing advanced computer knowledge and knowledge of basic office equipment.
• Exhibiting appropriate telephone communication skills.

Qualifications

• Certifications: RHIT, RHIA or coding certification (CCA, CCS) by AHIMA or coding certification (CPC, CIC) by AAPC required.
• Experience: Minimum two years’ current experience in inpatient rehabilitation hospital coding (UB04 and IRF PAI).
