Role Description

Local Progress is seeking a Senior Staff Attorney. Working as part of a national legal and policy team, the Senior Staff Attorney will provide legal, policy, and research support to local elected officials in a variety of geographies, with particular emphasis on the organization’s priority issue areas, which include:

• Immigrant justice
• Economic justice and worker power
• Reimagining public safety
• Home rule and local democracy
• Advancing housing justice for all

The Senior Staff Attorney will lead and support strategies and tactics, including:

• Providing legal analysis on specific local policies
• Drafting amicus briefs and other litigation tactics
• Developing creative policy solutions for local leaders

This role will collaborate with national, state, and local partners to advance shared goals of protecting immigrant communities and advancing a proactive vision of full immigrant inclusion. The Senior Staff Attorney will report to the Managing Director, Legal and Policy.

This is a remote position based in the U.S. with no in-office requirement. The position requires travel to in-person events up to six days a month.

Qualifications

• A juris doctor degree and admission to a state bar.
• At least 9 years of relevant policy or legal experience.
• At least 4 years working on immigrant justice issues.
• Experience with organizing and campaigns.
• Strong attention to detail and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and anticipate obstacles.
• Awareness of issues of power, race, class, gender, and other forms of privilege.
• A demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice.
• Experience in relational organizing.
• Ability to take initiative and exercise strategic judgment.
• Ability to travel monthly.

Requirements

• Produce, edit, and review legal memos, amicus briefs, and other legal documents.
• Lead development of resources to move members into action.
• Engage with LP staff, members, and partners on policy and legal questions.
• Serve as the expert and lead strategist for immigrant justice.
• Envision, plan, and implement program offerings to advance immigrant justice.
• Staff the Immigrant Justice Steering Committee.
• Build and maintain strong working relationships with external partners.
• Support Local Progress and the Impact Lab's work.

• Salary between $108,600 and $111,000.
