The Legal team at Clever is a small but mighty group of experts dedicated to safeguarding student data while enabling company growth. As our Senior Legal Counsel, you will serve as a key 'second-in-command' for the legal function, taking the lead on our international expansion.
This is a unique opportunity to gain experience in a generalist role focused on building and running our global privacy and compliance programs during a pivotal chapter of Clever's journey.
How You’ll Make an Impact

You will be a key player in Clever's international expansion.

Partner with finance, product, marketing, sales, and the people team to grow Clever's footprint internationally.

Manage our GDPR and other global compliance programs.

Design and launch new processes to meet Clever’s evolving needs.

Ensure Clever has a fully operational international compliance and product counseling program.
A Day in the Life

Review a new feature that Product wants to launch for GDPR and other applicable digital regulation compliance.

Partner with Marketing to approve marketing copy for a promotion slated to run at a global vendor conference.

Provide legal support and strategic legal guidance to Clever’s account executives responsible for managing global client relationships.

Maintain and update internal data mappings, risk assessments, and records of processing.

Devise and launch a risk assessment for AI product features.

Collaborate cross-functionally on the launch plan to establish an entity in a foreign jurisdiction.

Teach others best practices around privacy compliance and foster a compliance culture at Clever.
Qualifications
-
JD and active bar membership in good standing of a State Bar with the ability to become barred or a registered in-house counsel in the state where this role is located.

3+ years of experience in privacy and product counseling.

2+ years supporting corporate, contracting, and/or employment matters outside of the United States.

Proven ability to manage complex compliance programs.

Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and comfort in contributing to cross-functional projects.
Requirements
-
Experience in EdTech or the education sector (preferred).

Prior in-house experience preferred but not required, including working with sales teams and counseling product teams.

Deep familiarity with privacy laws and in particular GDPR.

General knowledge of employment law, international corporate governance, IP, and commercial contracting.

Comfortable navigating ambiguity and operating as a generalist to provide practical, timely solutions across various departments.

Strong people skills with proven ability to build strong working relationships with internal clients.

Practical and proactive problem-solver, confident, mature, calm under fire, with a positive attitude.
