Role Description

GCI's Core Network Administrator II will provide expert-level support for local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), and internet-based systems. Responsibilities include:

• Operational monitoring, proactive support, detailed analysis, and systems administration.
• Maintaining, securing, and configuring network systems and applications.
• Configuration, troubleshooting, security, and performance optimization of data communications hardware and software components.
• Close coordination, testing, troubleshooting, upgrading, and maintenance of the network infrastructure.
• Supporting the company’s IP and core route/switch network environment.
• Providing expert technical support for incident resolution.

Scope of Work:

• Focus on the foundational infrastructure supporting the organization's entire network.

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee software updates and patching of network components.
• Test and validate high availability of services and network infrastructure.
• Secure device access and address vulnerabilities.
• Drive network optimization efforts.
• Facilitate regular device backups.
• Provide physical equipment support for break/fix activities.
• Conduct project delivery Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC).

Key Activities:

• Analyze and monitor new software and firmware releases.
• Conduct verification and testing of new software and patch implementations.
• Plan, schedule, and execute the software and firmware upgrade/patch process.
• Review and analyze the effectiveness of implemented network and service redundancy designs.
• Verify, modify, and update security configurations for network devices.
• Identify, investigate, and resolve security vulnerabilities.
• Drive the identification and implementation of network optimizations.
• Configure and manage device configuration backups.
• Support the Situation Management Center with break/fix support.
• Contribute to QA/QC processes for new project implementations.

Qualifications

• In-depth knowledge of IP/MPLS routers and switches (Nokia, Cisco, Juniper, Brocade).
• Expertise in network firewalls (Palo Alto, Cisco, Checkpoint).
• Proficiency with Wireless LAN Controllers (WLCs), Meraki, and WAN Optimization technologies.
• Basic understanding of network supporting equipment (console servers, network timing appliances).
• Fundamental understanding of DOCSIS and EPON systems.
• Expertise in physical connectivity (Ethernet, fiber optic connections).
• Comprehensive understanding of IPv4 and IPv6.
• Strong understanding of standard network service architectures (MPLS VPNs, VPRNs, etc.).
• Fundamental understanding of network timing protocols (PTP, SYNC-E, NTP).
• Basic understanding of standard QoS.
• Proficient in network access control and security protocols (Radius, LDAP, AAA, TACACS+).

Requirements

• A combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job.
• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Associates degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, Networking, or related field.
• A minimum of six (6) years’ combined work experience with network platforms, testing, routers, and/or switches.
