Role Description
Magnolia Tax Services is hiring a Senior Tax Reviewer to review business and individual returns, talk directly with clients, and serve as a technical anchor for our preparer team. This is a fully remote, full-time role open to candidates living in Wisconsin or Illinois.
What you'll do:
-
Review Forms 1120-S, 1065, and 1040 (with Schedules C and E) prepared in Drake by our domestic and offshore preparers before they go to the client.
-
Prepare complex returns yourself when needed, especially multi-entity S-corp and partnership groups.
-
Check the items that matter most for our clients: shareholder and partner basis, reasonable compensation, K-1 flow-through, depreciation and cost segregation, passive activity rules, and state filings.
-
Lead return review calls with clients, explaining results, open items, and planning opportunities in plain language.
-
Respond to IRS and state notices and support the team on correspondence audits.
-
Give preparers clear, written review notes that help them improve.
-
Flag planning opportunities (entity structure, retirement plans, accountable plans) to firm leadership.
-
Help refine our review checklists and workflow in TaxDome during and after tax season.
Qualifications
-
Enrolled Agent or CPA credential (active), or CPA candidate with substantial review experience.
-
4+ years preparing business returns, including at least 2 seasons reviewing 1120-S and 1065 returns.
-
Strong working knowledge of S-corp and partnership basis, reasonable compensation, and Schedule E rental activity.
-
Confident speaking with clients by phone and video, including explaining a return or a notice.
-
Comfortable working remotely and independently, with US Central Time business-hours availability.
-
Lives in Wisconsin or Illinois.
Requirements
-
Medical practice or restaurant clients (nice to have).
-
Multistate returns, especially Wisconsin and Illinois (nice to have).
-
Experience with Drake Tax and TaxDome (our software stack); other professional tax software experience also welcome (nice to have).
Benefits
-
Base salary: $70,000 to $80,000, based on experience and credential.
-
Busy-season performance bonus.
-
401(k) with a 100% employer match on up to 4% of pay (safe harbor plan), eligible after 6 months.
-
Health reimbursement (QSEHRA): $400/month toward individual health and dental premiums and out-of-pocket medical costs, tax-free, after 90 days.
-
Full-time, W-2.
-
100% remote (must live in Wisconsin or Illinois); standard Central Time business hours, with extended hours during tax season.
-
A remote role without Big 4 hours, direct access to firm leadership, and a growing client base built on planning work.
How to Apply
Submit your resume and answer the screening questions. Shortlisted candidates will complete a short review exercise (one 1120-S with planted errors) and a video interview with firm leadership.
