Role Description
The General Accountant provides end-to-end accounting and payroll support for an established Australian architectural design firm. Working closely with the Sydney-based finance team, Principals, and Senior Associates, this role manages:

Invoicing

Project accounting

Payroll preparation for approximately 60 staff

Accounts payable
-
Banking
-
Month-end activities
This position requires:

Qualifications
-
Bachelorβs degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related business discipline

Minimum 6 years of hands-on accounting experience
-
Experience in a professional services, construction, engineering, or design-related firm is an advantage
-
Strong understanding of Australian payroll practices and GST (preferred)

Experience in invoicing, project accounting, reconciliations, and month-end tasks
-
ERP system exposure (Fresh Projects experience is an advantage but not essential)

Excellent written and verbal English communication skills

High accuracy, strong attention to detail, and proactive follow-through

Comfortable working with senior stakeholders and managing end-to-end accounting tasks independently

Confident with Excel and adaptable to learning new systems quickly

High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to work with minimal supervision
Requirements

Prepare monthly progress invoices in line with project billing schedules

Manage the full invoicing cycle, including supporting documents, revisions, and follow-up

Maintain invoice registers and generate debtor reports
-
Support quarterly revenue reconciliations
-
Set up and maintain new projects in Fresh Projects ERP

Ensure accuracy of project data and reporting

Prepare sales forecasts and management reports
-
Assist Principals and Senior Associates with project-related financial queries
-
Work with multiple cost centres and understand project-level vs office-level allocations
-
Prepare payroll for approximately 60 Australian employees
-
Process leave entries and generate Xero leave reports
-
Set up new starters in Xero and Fresh Projects
-
Prepare PAYG, superannuation, and payroll tax submissions for approval
-
Process supplier invoices and manage payment enquiries
-
Prepare payment batches and submit for approval
-
Perform bank reconciliations and proactively resolve discrepancies
-
Prepare monthly journals and adjustments (including team cost allocations)
-
Maintain organised financial records using SharePoint and Microsoft Suite
-
Support month-end reporting and ad hoc management requests
