[Hiring] Substation Design Engineer III @LanceSoft

Role Description

This role is remote but needs to be local to the Johnston Office in RI so they can visit for site walks 5 times a year.

• 12 months assignment with possible extension based on performance
• Pay range: $60.00 - 80.00/Hr on w2 (all inclusive)
• 6+ years of experience preparing estimates, feasibility studies, understanding electrical engineering drawings, project lifecycle
• Previous Substation Design experience required
• Experience with bill of materials, transmission distribution substations required
• Ability to write technical reports and estimation packages

Qualifications

• BS degree in engineering (electrical, mechanical, or civil preferred)
• Must be able to travel to job sites within client service territory as needed
• Must have a valid driver’s license
• Must be able to work five 8-hour days Monday through Friday at the Main office
• Must have ability to work within the United States without sponsorship
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience designing electric utility substations
• Must have working knowledge of National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)
• Must be proficient in AutoCAD
• Must possess strong interpersonal, communications and technical skills
• Demonstrated proficiency with standard desktop PC applications
• Knowledge and ability to apply Company safety and industrial hygiene policies
• Ability to handle multiple projects, prioritize and organize work effectively
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Ability to achieve confined space certification and ascend/descend on ladders

Requirements

• 10 years’ experience in substation design (preferred)
• 3 years’ experience in project management (preferred)

Typical Responsibilities

• Lead the execution, review, and comment on the work performed by client’s selected Design Contractor(s) or Internal Designers
• Administer, monitor, manage, and execute the contractor substation engineering resources and activities
• Act as the substation asset owner for projects
• Develop a decision evaluation matrix for scope, budget, and cost
• Participate in the evaluation of substation engineering bid proposals
• Provide necessary technical expertise and oversight to the engineering contractor
• Work closely with Project Management and Construction Management
• Accountable for addressing entire engineering scope
• Responsible for the application of organizational policies
• Act as the engineering lead for the project on PPL’s behalf
• Coordinate resources and schedules to meet established deadlines
• Guide the engineering process through PPL’s established workflows
• Ensure the design utilizes PPL’s established specifications

Construction Oversight Responsibilities

• Oversee, review and comment on the work performed by client’s selected Construction Contractor(s)
• Verify that construction meets the design criteria for the project
• Interact with construction inspectors
• Address engineering challenges during construction

Standards Development Responsibilities

• Work with manufacturers to determine products or materials needed for each project
• Develop standards based on new materials
• Record and document standards and catalogue units in client’s records

Pre-Design Meeting Responsibilities

• Review the Scope of Work for accuracy and completeness
• Ensure all necessary client deliverables are in-hand
• Identify applicable client specifications for the project
• Identify any issues requiring special attention

Field Walk-Down Responsibilities

• Review the site for design and constructability obstacles/issues
• Identify potential access and environmental/permitting issues
• Define access and locations for necessary soil borings
• Identify open right-of-way issues and/or applicable design restrictions

Design Review Responsibilities

• Review the Design Contractor’s preliminary designs for client required criteria
• Ensure designs are consistent with industry standard criteria
• Review the Design Contractor’s check-off list at the Design Complete stage
• Review the Design Contractor’s drawing set for completeness and clarity

Work Location and Flexibility

• Position may be both office based and field based as required
• Expect flexibility in reporting to a field location for field reviews and construction support

Independent Work Expectations

• Work independently to organize and complete assignments by the agreed schedule
• Act as a substation mentor for technical substation project support, young engineers, and project management
