[Hiring] Senior Data Center Power Systems Engineer @SPOC Energy

2mths ago - SPOC Energy is hiring a remote Senior Data Center Power Systems Engineer. πŸ’Έ Salary: unspecified πŸ“Location: USA

Role Description

SPOC Energy is seeking a Senior Data Center Power Systems Engineer to lead the design and development of advanced electrical power systems supporting mission-critical applications, including next-generation data center infrastructure.

This role is responsible for transforming product and solution requirements into complete electrical system solutions by defining power architecture, selecting major electrical components, and ensuring system performance, efficiency, and reliability.

The ideal candidate understands how electrical power flows through a system and can confidently design around real-world operating requirements. This includes:

  • Sizing and selecting inverters, batteries, transformers, power distribution equipment, protection devices, and other major electrical components while balancing performance, safety, manufacturability, and cost.

This is a hands-on engineering role where technical expertise directly influences product architecture and future technology development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 8+ years of electrical systems design experience.
  • Strong understanding of AC and DC electrical power systems.
  • Knowledge of ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or equivalent.
  • Experience designing medium and low voltage power systems.
  • Experience performing electrical load calculations and equipment sizing.
  • Knowledge of electrical protection principles and power distribution.
  • Experience selecting electrical equipment based on application requirements.
  • Ability to select and validate model inputs, understand machine and system dynamics, identify faulty assumptions, interpret complex study results, and make independent design decisions.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and one-line diagrams.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Requirements

  • Design complete electrical power system architectures for mission-critical applications.
  • Develop system-level electrical designs based on customer requirements and application needs.
  • Perform electrical load analysis, power calculations, and equipment sizing.
  • Select and specify major electrical components including:
    • Inverters
    • Battery energy storage systems
    • Power conversion equipment
    • Transformers
    • Circuit protection devices
    • Switchgear and distribution equipment
    • Cabling and interconnects
  • Evaluate power flow, efficiency, fault current, thermal loading, and overall system performance.
  • Collaborate with Controls Engineering to ensure seamless integration between electrical hardware and control systems.
  • Work closely with Mechanical Engineering to optimize packaging, cooling, and manufacturability.
  • Support prototype development, testing, validation, and field commissioning.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide technical leadership throughout product development.
  • Research emerging technologies related to electrical power systems, power electronics, and energy infrastructure.
  • Develop technical documentation including electrical one-line diagrams, system layouts, specifications, and design calculations.
  • Support customer discussions by providing technical expertise during project planning and solution development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience designing, analyzing, commissioning, or troubleshooting complex power systems in multiple of the following application areas:
    • Data center and mission-critical power infrastructure
    • Battery Energy Storage Systems, including grid-forming and grid-following converter applications
    • UPS and static power-conversion systems
    • Inverter-based resources and high-power converter systems
    • Generator-based and hybrid power systems
    • Microgrids and islanded power systems
    • Generation and distribution systems
    • Renewable energy integration
    • Marine, industrial, utility, or other critical-power applications
  • Preferred candidates will have direct responsibility for several of the following:
    • Development and review of system one-lines, equipment specifications, protection philosophies, and control narratives
    • Load-flow, short-circuit, arc-flash, protection-coordination, motor-starting, harmonic, grounding, and transient-stability studies
    • Integration of generators, BESS, UPS systems, inverters, transformers, switchgear, and large dynamic loads
    • Analysis of inverter-dominated systems, weak-grid conditions, constant-power loads, power-quality concerns, and control-system interactions
    • Electrical equipment selection, grounding design, relay protection, switching philosophy, and system coordination
    • Factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis
    • Technical leadership of multidisciplinary projects and review of work performed by other engineers or consultants
    • Development of technically defensible recommendations based on study results, equipment limitations, applicable standards, and operating requirements
  • Knowledge and application of relevant codes and standards, including, as applicable:
    • NFPA 70, National Electrical Code
    • NFPA 70E
    • IEEE power-system analysis, protection, grounding, and equipment standards
    • UL standards applicable to switchgear, power conversion equipment, energy storage, and control systems
    • Applicable utility interconnection requirements
    • Applicable marine classification, industrial, or mission-critical standards

Location

  • Trussville, AL location preferred.
  • Remote is acceptable with 30%-50% travel.
  • May include travel for customer visits.
