[Hiring] Design Safety Engineer @IPS-Integrated Project Services

Role Description

At IPS, we are global leaders in developing innovative solutions for the consulting, architecture, engineering, project controls, procurement, construction management, and CQV of technically complex facilities, primarily in the life sciences industry. We are looking for a dedicated Design Safety Engineer to join our talented team at any of our U.S. office locations (MA, NJ, PA, MD, NC, KS, CA). This position can also be remote.

In this role, you will support the development, implementation, and maintenance of the IPS Design Division Safety Program. You will also work with the Director of Engineering and Design Safety on two primary responsibilities:

• Ensure that the designs produced by the IPS Design Division can be constructed, operated, and maintained without compromising the safety and health of all associated personnel, and without compromising the property and environment in which they are constructed and operated.
• Implement and monitor the Design Field Safety program to ensure the safety of the IPS Design Division personnel in their daily activities.

Additional Responsibilities

• Works with the Director of Engineering and Design Safety to provide high-quality process safety support.
• Coordinates with the director, project managers, and clients to determine the scope, complexity, planning, and scheduling requirements of project activities.
• Determines the type of safety reviews required for the specific project, including design risk assessments, process hazard analyses (PHA), hazardous area classification (HAC), ergonomic reviews, etc.
• Facilitates process hazard analyses (PHAs) and design risk assessments using applicable methodology, including HAZOP, What-if, HAZID, LOPA, etc.
• Coordinates planning, resource scheduling, and compliance with applicable client standards.
• Supports the development and implementation of IPS process safety programs, including PHA, PRD, LEL calculations, and HAC.
• Develops departmental policies, technical standards, and procedures.
• Provides technical review for related reports and technical documentation.
• Trains IPS personnel on process safety management.
• Coordinates with outside consultants for training and resourcing to meet IPS standards.
• As needed, performs process safety calculations relating to PRD, LEL infiltration, and hazardous area classification.
• Conducts various reviews to ensure that facility designs accommodate appropriate regulations, including containment provided when projects are dealing with biosafety, radiation safety, or potent compounds; accommodation of combustible/flammable dusts and solvents per building codes and standard industrial practice.
• Provides consultation services to colleagues and clients on potential hazards and mitigation strategies.
• Estimates work hours to generate project deliverables and support the design safety team.
• Ensures the quality, accuracy, consistency, and completeness of overall work, including compliance with established IPS standards and procedures and regulatory codes and ordinances.
• Timely delivery of project deliverables adhering to project schedules.
• Participates in business development by seeking out new service opportunities with existing or new clients.
• Contributes to the preparation and delivery of sales presentations and proposals.
• Evaluates and monitors necessary training and awareness programs for design division personnel.
• Supports implementation of the Design Field Safety program through auditing of completed checklists; provides additional training when results show continued deficiencies.
• Supports design division personnel in the identification and assessment of workplace hazards at both IPS and client facilities.
• Special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

• Has sufficient technical proficiency in various facets of process safety to understand project requirements and apply the appropriate resources and execution approach for a successful project.
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited University or College in Engineering, Architecture, or a relevant science.
• Knowledge of OSHA 1910 and 1926 requirements.
• Experience interacting and communicating directly with cross-functional facility owner teams.
• Excellent time management skills and the ability to work on multiple projects contemporaneously.

Requirements

• 10+ years of industrial Process Safety experience (preferred).
• Some experience in the AEC or Life Sciences industries (preferred).

Physical Demands

• Must be able to stand, sit, and walk for prolonged periods.
• Must possess the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl as required.
• Must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Must be able to climb ladders as necessary.

Work Environment

• Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor environments, which may include exposure to varying working conditions.
• Must be able to adhere to strict cleanroom gowning protocol.

Travel

• This position will have 5-20% travel, or as required by the assigned project.
• Position may be assigned to a client site for an extended period.
• Overnight travel or staying in the city of the Client’s location is possible, depending on the assignment.
• You will visit Client sites and will be required to adhere to stated safety rules.
• Must have access to reliable transportation.
• Must have the ability to travel and commute on a daily or routine basis.

Safety

• This position is a safety-sensitive position.
• The employee is designated for field work and attends activities at client sites where they work in construction, process, packaging, manufacturing, research, or other "non-administrative" areas.
• All interviews are conducted either in person or virtually, with video required.

Salary

The salary offered for this role is between $131,000 and $174,000, but the actual salary offered is dependent on experience, skill set, and education.
