Role Description
St. Joseph’s College of Nursing invites applications for Adjunct Faculty to teach Introductory Sociology, a foundational general education course serving nursing and allied health students. The course emphasizes core sociological concepts, social institutions, culture, and social inequalities, with intentional connections to healthcare, public service, and patient-centered care. This role includes responsibility for developing a complete asynchronous online course aligned with institutional and Quality Matters–informed standards.
Job Expectations

Design and develop a complete asynchronous online course based on an approved syllabus, including weekly modules, learning activities, assessments, and instructional materials.

Align course design and delivery with institutional course quality standards informed by Quality Matters principles.

Collaborate with the College’s Quality Matters Coordinator and academic leadership during course development and review processes.

Deliver engaging, well-structured weekly modules that support student learning and course objectives.

Facilitate asynchronous online instruction using Canvas.

Provide timely, meaningful feedback on discussions, assignments, and assessments.

Apply adult learning principles and inclusive teaching practices to support nursing and allied health students.

Recognize and respond to student learning needs, providing appropriate academic support.

Contribute to course evaluation and continuous improvement efforts.

Maintain prescribed adjunct faculty workload, including instructional responsibilities, student communication, and participation in course-level planning.
Required Technology

Reliable computer hardware capable of supporting learning management system use.

Webcam and microphone for meetings, training, or orientation as required.

Ability to use required instructional and communication software provided by the College.
Qualifications

Master’s degree in Sociology or a closely related field with at least 18 graduate credits in Sociology (official transcripts required upon hire).

Demonstrated ability to teach at the college level.

Experience using a learning management system (Canvas preferred).

Strong written communication skills appropriate for asynchronous instruction.
Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience teaching fully asynchronous online courses.

Experience developing a fully online course from a syllabus or course outline.

Training in Quality Matters (QM) or another recognized online course quality framework.

Experience developing or revising online courses using evidence-based instructional design principles.

Experience teaching nursing or allied health student populations.

Familiarity with inclusive pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching practices.
Work Schedule & Modality

Fully asynchronous online delivery.

Faculty must maintain consistent weekly instructor presence and timely grading in accordance with College expectations.

Synchronous office hours per instructor discretion.

Initial semester may involve additional course development responsibilities prior to and during course delivery.

Pay Range
$37.60 - $52.90. Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
