Role Description

As part of our ongoing growth and expansion, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced Education and Outreach Specialist to join our growing team.

• Professional Development / Outreach Training: Provide instructional and design leadership to implement a national educator professional development program across online, onsite, and hybrid platforms to enhance ocean literacy and advance agency mission objectives.
• Program Design and Coordination:
  • Providing instructional and design leadership for national educator Professional Development (PD) effort (online/onsite/hybrid).
  • Designing, coordinating, and delivering national NOAA Ocean Exploration professional learning and professional development opportunities for educators.
  • Developing objectives and agendas, workshop materials, and curating NOAA Ocean Exploration content.
  • Communicating workshop priorities and creating informational and promotional materials.
• Network Management:
  • Work with a network of Professional Development Facilitators.
  • Maintain and train a network of internal and external workshop facilitators.
  • Lead facilitator training and monitor meetings for consistency.
• Partnership and Liaison Coordination:
  • Serve as the Alliance Partner site coordinator liaison.
  • Coordinate with the Education Team Lead and Outreach and Education Division Chief to cultivate new Alliance Partnerships.
  • Prepare and execute planned ocean education partner meeting logistics.
• Execution and Evaluation:
  • Regularly present workshops and promote offerings.
  • Oversee advertising and execute PD evaluations.
• Workshop and Course Management:
  • Manage Professional Development Workshops for educators.
  • Provide program management for online EX teacher professional development courses.
• Outreach and Web Services:
  • Coordinate with graphics designers to develop workshop announcements.
  • Keep the Professional Development offering and Education Alliance page up to date on the OE website.
• Project Coordination:
  • Collaborate with the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research for project coordination and technical services.
• Outreach and Partnerships: Provide technical and administrative services for the management of existing alliances and the development of new educational partnerships and programs.
• Alliance Partnership Management:
  • Coordinate with the Director of Education of OER to manage financial agreements.
  • Establish new alliance partnerships.
• Education Program Development:
  • Prepare and coordinate with the Director of Education of OER to develop an education outreach program.
• Education / Outreach Product Development: Provide technical and administrative services for the creation, management, and refinement of educational materials and digital content.
• Content Management and Gap Analysis:
  • Establish and maintain a storage management system for education content.
  • Identify gaps in current content and priorities for new materials.
• Education Product Development:
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute the development of education products.
• Brand Identity and Graphic Design Services:
  • Coordinate the development of a unique brand identity for NOAA Ocean Exploration.
  • Perform graphic design of new educational materials.
• Translation and Evaluation Coordination:
  • Execute education and outreach product translations.
  • Identify resource evaluation needs and coordinate the workflow of external evaluators.
• Education / Outreach Strategy and Programmatic Growth: Provide technical and administrative services for the development, implementation, and expansion of education and outreach strategies.
• Education Strategy and Implementation:
  • Execute education strategy development and implementation.
  • Analyze the education landscape and educator needs.
  • Identify gaps in current education offerings.
• Promotion and Communications Strategy:
  • Coordinate the development and execution of a promotion strategy for sharing NOAA Ocean Exploration updates.
  • Provide prompt updates for the NOAA Ocean Exploration website.
• Educational Outreach Material Development:
  • Plan, develop, maintain, and execute lists of educational outreach materials.
• Expedition Education Coverage:
  • Execute expedition education coverage through modernized web-based approaches.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Science Education, Curriculum Development, or a related field; OR a degree in marine/ocean science-related field with professional experience as an educator, outreach specialist, or program coordinator.
• Deep understanding of oceanography, marine ecosystems, and current marine technology.
• Demonstrated experience developing age-appropriate educational materials or programming that support national formal education standards.
• Ability to translate complex scientific data into clear, engaging materials for diverse audiences.
• Ability to manage the full product development lifecycle and work with external contractors.
• Strong oral and written communication skills across diverse audiences.
• Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills with internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

• This is a 100% remote position (full-time telework).
• Occasional travel is required (5+ trips annually).
• Proximity to a major commercial airport is highly preferred.
