Role Description
The Assistant Teaching Professor is responsible for coordinating, leading, and teaching courses in the MSN program. The MSN Faculty upholds academic integrity, follows standards of practice, and collaborates with all MSN and SON faculty to ensure curriculum alignment with CCNE Essentials and the national standards applicable to the assigned track. The role supports graduate preparation for national certification eligibility in the APRN, NEL, or NED track, fosters program effectiveness, and promotes a student-centered, high-quality learning environment.
Organizational Relationship

Workload assigned by the Associate Director/MSN Program Director and SON Director.

Evaluated annually by the Associate School Director and/or SON Director with input from peer faculty.

Maintain regular, proactive communication with MSN Faculty and Program Director regarding course operations, student concerns, and any emerging issues.
Program Leadership
-
Actively engage in SON, MSN program, course, and university meetings as designated by the SON Director and Associate Director/MSN Program Director.

Collaborate regularly with other MSN Faculty to address MSN curriculum, course content, grading practices, student concerns, and faculty or university-related matters.

Contribute to program success through participation in activities related to student admission, progression, and orientation.

Ensure alignment with CCNE Standards and national competencies applicable to the assigned track.
Faculty Leadership

Maintain an active presence and engagement throughout the MSN program.

Collaboratively review and discuss student assignments receiving a grade of 80% or below.

Plan, teach, manage, and evaluate lectures and course activities.

Review course materials to ensure alignment with current evidence-based practice and communicate necessary updates to the applicable MSN Track Coordinator(s).

Collaborate closely with the MSN Program Director/Associate Director and MSN faculty to maintain the quality of courses and overall program effectiveness.
Other Duties

Be accessible and available to students, supervisor, staff, and colleagues during NKU operation hours (8:00 am β 4:30 pm EST).

Serve on SON and program committees as assigned and attend SON, program, and other meetings in person or virtually.
Education
-
Doctoral degree in Nursing or related field required.

For APRN track positions, an Advanced Practice Certification in a nurse practitioner specialty (FNP, AGACNP, PMHNP).

For NEL and NED track positions, MSN in nursing with graduate preparation in nursing leadership/administration or nursing education, respectively.
Qualifications

Minimum of two years of clinical nursing practice required.

Must possess an active and unencumbered registered nursing (RN) license in State of residence.

For APRN track positions, at least five years of full-time, past and current direct patient care as an APRN in the designated specialty area.

For NEL and NED track positions, comparable full-time professional experience in nursing leadership/administration or nursing education.

Previous graduate-level teaching required.

Previous online teaching experience required.

Experience or expertise with course content.

Pass pre-employment criminal background check as mandated by state law.
Professional Expectations

Maintain active unencumbered RN licensure and, for APRN track positions, APRN certification/licensure.

Maintain current knowledge of professional discipline and educational methodologies through continuing professional development.

For APRN track positions, maintain part-time clinical practice as needed to maintain APRN certification/licensure.

Maintain current knowledge of program policies, procedures, and student progress.

Adhere to faculty professional standards as delineated in the NKU Faculty Handbook.

Utilize nku.edu email for ALL course communications.

Teach and precept as needed to meet program needs.
Required Training

Complete Clinical systems training currently used in program (i.e., Medatrax).
