[Hiring] Associate Director, Design @Macmillan

Role Description

Flatiron is seeking a detail-oriented Associate Design Director to lead the creative direction and execute interior designs for a fast-paced imprint with a diverse list of fiction and non-fiction titles with a focus on lifestyle, popular fiction, and high-design cookbooks. A strong sense of design, excellent communication skills, critical thinking, and experience with 4-color book production is required.

This motivated individual will report to the Senior Creative Director to work collaboratively across groups to help establish efficiency; to manage and delegate effectively; and to strive for design excellence across the organization.

What you'll do:

• Collaborate with authors, editors and support departments to establish the creative direction of the list
• Manage budgets, schedules and art programs
• Create solid design samples, photo inserts and page layouts
• Liaise with the cover department to create cohesive packages
• Supervise freelancers—designers, cartographers and contractors
• Provide our compositor with clear effective instructions
• Create flawless printer-ready files using in-house processes and systems
• Choose case materials and design spine dies
• Check and correct color proofs

Qualifications

• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite
• Expertise in typography, design and layout
• A passion for design
• Knowledge of prepress and print production
• Lead by example: strong ability to work well with others
• Extensive experience working on four-color books
• 10 years of experience working in trade publishing

Requirements

• This role will have an annual salary range of $105,000 - $115,000.
• This position is classified as remote but is tied to our New York, NY office located at 120 Broadway.
• Employment is subject to New York State tax withholding under applicable regulations.
