Role Description

This role owns the data engineering environment for a fully remote, mission-driven healthcare organization, ensuring reliable, well-governed data flows across a complex Snowflake-based platform while also serving as an analytical partner to clinical and business stakeholders.

• Own and improve dbt model refresh cadences across an environment of approximately 700 dbt objects, ensuring data freshness and schedule reliability throughout a layered raw-to-marts pipeline architecture.
• Extend and maintain ELT connectors that bring in SaaS and clinical source systems, and write Python jobs to handle sources that managed connectors cannot cover, including REST APIs, SFTP feeds, and partner file drops.
• Troubleshoot data flow and pipeline issues across multiple layers, investigating why data or identifiers are not passing correctly between pipeline stages.
• Build and maintain monitoring and alerting so that pipeline failures are visible and recoverable before downstream users are impacted.
• Manage Snowflake role grants, masking policies for sensitive data including student PHI, and query performance and cost optimization.
• Investigate incoming data questions from clinical leaders and business stakeholders, tracing numbers back to their source and unblocking users with actionable answers rather than simple table references.
• Partner with the core engineering team on application state and upstream system issues that affect data flow, and collaborate with existing data resources to improve overall team capability.

Qualifications

• 4 years of hands-on data engineering experience building and operating data pipelines in production environments.
• Proficiency in Snowflake, including roles, grants, query performance, cost management, and data masking policies.
• Hands-on dbt experience, including writing and owning models, sources, and tests.
• Strong SQL skills and experience investigating data quality issues across multiple pipeline layers.
• Experience working with non-engineering stakeholders, translating vague data questions into queries and actionable answers.
• Pragmatic, iterative approach to problem-solving, comfortable operating independently in ambiguous, imperfectly documented environments.

Requirements

• Experience with Fivetran or comparable managed ELT platforms.
• AWS fluency covering IAM, S3, secrets management, and scheduled workloads, along with infrastructure-as-code experience, ideally Terraform.
• Working Python skills for data integration tasks such as REST API calls, SFTP handling, and file parsing.
• Experience with a BI tool such as Sigma, Metabase, Looker, or Tableau, including support for migrations between tools.
• Healthcare data experience, including comfort with HIPAA, PHI handling, and de-identification practices.
• Exposure to access-as-code tooling such as Permifrost or column-level masking policy design.
• Background spanning multiple companies or environments, with demonstrated ability to bring outside best practices and patterns to a new organization.
