[Hiring] Senior Manager, Data Science @Upstart

Role Description

As the leading AI lending marketplace, Upstart partners with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit through technology that’s both radically intelligent and deeply human. You'll lead a team of analysts and data scientists who are embedded with each marketing channel and responsible end to end for its work.

• Put experimentation at the center of the team's work: decide which tests are worth running across channels, and ensure the results influence future marketing strategies.
• Guide the team's analysis toward explaining why a channel's performance moved and what marketing should do about it.
• Encourage proactive analysis that identifies problems or opportunities before marketing requests it.
• Maintain high standards on the team's measurement work, including incrementality tests and attribution, ensuring high-quality outputs.
• Collaborate with marketing, finance, and product leaders to set the team's roadmap, ensuring alignment with business context.
• Hire and develop a team that marketing leaders view as partners rather than just a reporting service.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in data science and analytics, including 5+ years managing teams of analysts and data scientists.
• Technical depth across marketing analytics and data science, including reporting, experiments, causal inference, and attribution.
• Proficiency in SQL and Python to review the team's work.
• A record of hiring effectively and developing team members into more senior roles.
• Good judgment in ambiguous areas, capable of framing unasked questions and assessing their value.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills with various audiences, including marketing, finance, product, and technical teams.

Requirements

• A PhD or master's degree in statistics, economics, computer science, or another quantitative field (preferred).
• Experience integrating AI tools into analysis and reporting work (preferred).
