Role Description

The Director of Business Development is responsible for driving new business growth and expanding strategic client relationships for Spaulding Clinical Research. This role identifies, develops, and advances business opportunities across pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and other healthcare organizations while promoting Spaulding’s Clinical Pharmacology, Cardiac Core Lab, and Biometrics services.

The Director manages opportunities throughout the full sales cycle, develops and maintains relationships with key decision-makers, and partners with internal subject matter experts to deliver solutions aligned with client needs. This position plays a key role in achieving business development and revenue objectives while strengthening Spaulding’s presence within the clinical research marketplace.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute business development strategies to identify new clients, expand existing accounts, and support organizational revenue goals.
  • Identify, research, and cultivate relationships with prospective pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and healthcare clients through targeted outreach, referrals, networking, industry events, and strategic partnerships.
  • Independently manage opportunities throughout the full sales cycle, from initial prospecting and qualification through proposal development, negotiation, award, and internal handoff.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key decision-makers and stakeholders to generate new and repeat business.
  • Promote Spaulding’s Clinical Pharmacology, Cardiac Core Lab, and Biometrics services based on client needs, development programs, and study requirements.
  • Develop strategic account plans and identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships through additional services and cross-selling.
  • Partner with Clinical Operations, Project Management, Medical, Biometrics, and other subject matter experts to develop client-focused solutions and business proposals.
  • Lead and support RFIs, RFPs, proposals, capabilities presentations, bid-defense activities, and client meetings.
  • Maintain accurate and timely account, contact, activity, and opportunity information within HubSpot or other designated CRM systems.
  • Manage and monitor pipeline activity, forecasts, opportunity progression, and business development performance against established goals.
  • Represent Spaulding Clinical Research at industry conferences, trade shows, client meetings, and networking events to strengthen relationships and generate new opportunities.
  • Monitor industry trends, competitive activity, client needs, and market opportunities and provide relevant insights to leadership.
  • Identify and develop strategic relationships and partnerships that support long-term business growth.
  • Collaborate with Marketing on campaigns, conferences, educational programs, and other initiatives that support lead generation and brand awareness.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of Spaulding’s capabilities, services, therapeutic expertise, and competitive position.
  • Provide leadership with regular updates regarding pipeline activity, market intelligence, client feedback, and business development opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Life Sciences, Healthcare, or a related field preferred; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • Five or more years of progressive experience in business development, sales, account management, clinical research, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, CRO, or a related industry preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record of developing new business and achieving sales or revenue goals.
  • Experience managing complex sales cycles and developing relationships with senior-level client stakeholders.
  • Experience selling clinical research, CRO, or related life sciences services strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Phase I Clinical Pharmacology, Cardiac Core Lab, Biometrics, or related clinical research services preferred.

  • Strong strategic business development, relationship-building, and consultative selling skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop new accounts and expand existing client relationships.
  • Ability to independently prospect, qualify, negotiate, and advance complex business opportunities.
  • Strong executive-level written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand client development programs and translate needs into appropriate Spaulding solutions.
  • Strong negotiation, problem-solving, decision-making, and follow-through skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple accounts, opportunities, and priorities within a dynamic business environment.
  • Strong understanding of sales pipeline management, forecasting, and CRM practices.
  • Proficiency with HubSpot, Salesforce, or other CRM systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Professional presence and ability to effectively represent Spaulding Clinical Research with senior-level clients, partners, and industry stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across functional teams and organizational levels.
  • Ability to travel up to 40% or as business needs require.
