Role Description

Provides safety, health, environmental, and regulatory compliance leadership and support for North American facilities. Drives implementation of Koppers’ Zero Harm programs; ensures compliance with applicable regulations, permits, and internal policies; supports audits and incident investigations; delivers training; and partners with facility leadership to promote safe, sustainable, and compliant operations.

  • Oversee safety, health, and environmental matters at assigned North American locations, including implementation of corporate policies, programs, and initiatives.
  • Maintain expertise in federal OSHA and EPA requirements, analogous state and local regulations, applicable permits, and Koppers policies; monitor compliance and communicate requirements to facility leadership.
  • Provide clear guidance to sites on OSHA-required training requirements, including course selection, assignment, completion, and tracking of training through Workday LMS.
  • Lead and support site permitting activities, including permit applications, issuances, modifications, renewals, and terminations, as appropriate.
  • Partner with Corporate Zero Harm to develop and implement safety and environmental programs, policies, audits, and initiatives.
  • Coordinate with legal counsel on responses to regulatory agencies and participate in agency negotiations as appropriate.
  • Develop and deliver training for site-level Zero Harm coordinators to strengthen understanding of Koppers’ Zero Harm culture and applicable safety, health, and environmental regulations.
  • Develop and maintain proficient knowledge of FOCUS and provide relevant information and training to facility personnel and management.
  • Review, analyze, and trend incidents, agency inspections, audit findings, tasks, hazard identifications, and other Zero Harm communications.
  • Participate in community interaction and emergency preparedness program development.
  • Manage the Safety, Health, and Environmental Compliance Auditing Program; support corrective action plan development; conduct follow-ups; and share best practices across locations.
  • Support plants in incident classification, investigations, safety drills, regulatory compliance, and employee safety training.
  • Support industrial hygiene programs and medical monitoring activities, as needed.
  • Support facility Management of Change (MoC) and CAPEX processes to ensure safety, health, and environmental aspects and hazards are evaluated.
  • Participate in Koppers sustainability initiatives and support related site-level implementation efforts.
  • Champion collaboration across KPC sites to share best practices, align Zero Harm initiatives, and support consistent execution across locations.
  • Provide guidance on waste management and minimization.
  • Partner with Zero Harm (ZH) Coordinators to ensure a Job Function Evaluation (JFE) is completed for every role and aligned across sites whenever possible to promote consistency in role requirements and physical work expectations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science with Health and Safety, Safety Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or Environmental Science preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in occupational safety and/or environmental compliance at industrial manufacturing facility.
  • Safety and environmental management experience with multi-plant oversight preferred.
  • Demonstrated strength and knowledge in multimedia environmental practice (air, water, waste).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of states and federal occupational safety and environmental regulations preferred.
  • Certified in or be working on any of the following certifications: CHMM and/or CSP, QEP.
  • Ability to research problems and think creatively to develop solutions; be self-directed; think strategically; be compliance focused.
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to work well in both plant and corporate settings.
  • 30-40% travel is required under normal operations, including regular site engagement and quarterly visits to each KPC location.
