[Hiring] Site Reliability Engineer @ShiftKey

Role Description

As a Site Reliability Engineer on our SaaS team, you will keep OnShift's healthcare workforce management products stable, secure, and recoverable across Azure and AWS. You will work with a small SRE team and the SaaS engineering team to make releases safer and environments more reliable, while we modernize our core scheduling product and consolidate onto AWS.

The work is a mix of running production (incidents, Kubernetes workloads, databases and queues) and engineering that removes manual work: automating releases, fixing environment drift, and moving workloads between clouds.

This is a fully remote position based in the United States. You should be comfortable working asynchronously and partnering with teammates in different time zones.

What you’ll be doing:

• Split your time 50/50 between keeping the lights on (maintenance/support) and active development (improving automation and tooling).
• Help move workloads from Azure to AWS and support the infrastructure side of our Schedule modernization.
• Take part in the incident standby rotation and the follow-up work that keeps the same incident from happening twice.
• Investigate logs, debug crashing pods, and troubleshoot complex distributed system issues using observability tools - going deeper than just deploying charts.
• Use modern AI tools (ClaudeCode, Cursor) to automate toil and speed up workflows, maintaining a realistic balance between using new tech and relying on proven engineering principles.
• Make lower environments stable and consistent with production so engineers can trust what they test.
• Automate the parts of our release process that are still manual, using Azure DevOps Pipelines and ArgoCD.

Qualifications

• Hands-on production experience with Terraform (or Pulumi/CloudFormation), managing version-controlled, modular infrastructure through an infrastructure-as-code–first approach.
• Ability to spin up pods, debug broken deployments, and manage resources via YAML. We don't need you to architect a cluster from scratch on Day 1, but you must be comfortable operating inside one.
• Strong understanding of web application fundamentals (HTTP/S, SSL, GET/POST) to troubleshoot connectivity issues between services effectively.
• A programmatic mindset. Whether it’s Python, Go, or Bash, you write code to fix problems rather than fixing them manually every time.
• An open but skeptical attitude toward AI. You are willing to use LLMs to be more efficient, but you verify the output and don't use them as a crutch.
