Role Description

Responsible for assisting management in the general business operations of the company by overseeing and directing the company’s Safety Program for their assigned area(s). The Regional Safety Manager will ensure training all employees on the Safety Program and will act as a resource for safety related items. The overall goal of the Regional Safety Manager is to protect the Company’s interests and support employees so that they can successfully complete a quality project safely, while promoting and enhancing client relationships and the company’s image.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support and promote Alston Construction’s strong safety culture, both internally and externally.
  • Use discretion and independent judgment and professional skills to perform daily duties and to resolve issues.
  • Plan, develop and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations (including OSHA).
  • Make and implement recommendations to improve processes and procedures.
  • Remain current on all federal, state, and local construction-related safety regulations and laws.
  • Identify training needs to develop and implement safety awareness initiatives.
  • Monitor, manage, and conduct new hire safety orientations within the first 5 business days of the employee’s date of hire.
  • Conduct safety training in accordance with Alston Construction’s safety training matrix.
  • Design and implement metrics to monitor progress and effectiveness of safety initiatives.
  • Provide guidance, consultation, and reinforcement to Superintendents, Project Managers, and other personnel regarding safety policies.
  • Evaluate and provide feedback on potential subcontractors’ safety records.
  • Create and maintain emergency response and crisis management plans.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and develop action steps to correct deficiencies.
  • Ensure project field documentation related to safety is being properly processed and maintained.
  • Review Site Specific Safety and Health Plans (SSHPs) and ensure copies are on site.
  • Manage OSHA site visits and inspections and ensure appropriate reporting is made to government agencies.
  • Investigate all incidents utilizing the Root Cause Analysis format.
  • Assist with the preparation of material and evidence for use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
  • Manage Worker’s Compensation claims and return to work program.
  • Assist Project Team members with thorough incident investigations.
  • Interact, coordinate and work with insurance brokers and outside loss control services.
  • Manage drug testing and breath alcohol testing for post-accident and reasonable suspicion.
  • Prepare and maintain budgets for work performed.
  • Solicit feedback from personnel regarding areas of concern.
  • Represent the organization in community or industry safety groups and programs.
  • Maintain and submit Weekly/Monthly Safety Inspection Reports.
  • Ensure all Project Managers and Superintendents are provided with necessary safety materials.
  • Maintain detailed safety files and records.
  • Evaluate and recommend third party safety consultants.
  • Attend and participate in subcontractor meetings as needed.
  • Plan travel as far in advance as possible.
  • Participate in applicable corporate meetings and forums.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in construction safety management.
  • Valid State-issued driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • OSHA 30-hour Certification; OSHA 500 preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification.
  • Safety training/certifications in areas such as Fall Protection, Scaffolding, HAZCOM, etc.
  • CSP, CHST or other safety certification preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to work well with discretion and independent judgment.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable safety regulations and codes.
  • Excellent presentation and training skills.
  • Ability to mentor and develop capabilities in others.
  • Strong analytical and investigation skills.
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Proficiency in computers, Microsoft Project, Word, Excel and Outlook.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, kneel, crouch, climb, and reach.
  • Lift 10 lbs.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended hours and flexible schedules.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently.

Work Environment

  • Combination of office and field work.
  • Exposure to outside weather elements while in the field.
  • May be exposed to loud noises, fumes, and/or airborne particles.
