[Hiring] Peer Review Coordinator @Canadian Science Publishing

Role Description

CSP is seeking a Peer Review Coordinator for a 12-month fixed-term contract (with possible extension) to provide backfill support during temporary leave. Reporting to the Peer Review Manager, this role has no direct reports and is responsible for the day-to-day coordination of the peer review process for one or more journals, from initial submission through export to production.

The Peer Review Coordinator supports authors, reviewers, editors, and colleagues in navigating the peer review platform and processes, helping to ensure a positive author experience while upholding CSP’s high standards for rigor, quality, and timeliness in peer review.

• Managing the peer review process for one or more journals
• Screening manuscripts for scope and adherence to ethical, submission, and production standards
• Assigning and completing peer review tasks, including picking and inviting reviewers
• Ensuring accepted manuscripts are complete and ready for publication
• Interacting daily with researchers to help them navigate peer review and fulfill their roles in the process
• Providing exceptional customer service
• Developing and maintaining good working relationships with authors, reviewers, and editors
• Working with colleagues to develop resources for researchers, provide editor onboarding and training, and coordinate editorial board activities
• Ensuring a positive experience for authors that delivers on CSP’s ambitious standards for rigor and timeliness in peer review
• Safeguarding ethical best practice in peer review
• Handling appeals and complaints according to established processes
• Actively encouraging transfer of rejected articles that would be suitable for another CSP journal
• Monitoring turnaround times, then taking action to achieve faster times commensurate with maintenance of standards
• Supporting colleagues with journal backup as needed
• Working to continuously improve peer review and journal development
• Developing and maintaining strong collaborative working relationships with CSP colleagues
• Actively contributing to journal development by providing regular feedback on journal performance to colleagues in the Editorial group and participating in journal development meetings
• Making recommendations to improve peer review processes and practices

Qualifications

• An Honours bachelor's degree in science or engineering, or a bachelor's degree combined with significant experience in scholarly publishing, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Familiarity with scientific research and/or scholarly publishing environments, with experience in an editorial or publishing setting, is considered an asset.
• Knowledge of editorial workflows and peer review processes, or subject-matter familiarity relevant to the journal’s discipline.
• A commitment to continuous learning and staying current with developments in your field.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and consistently meet deadlines.
• A creative and analytical mindset, with a focus on improving processes and enhancing the author and stakeholder experience.
