Role Description

The Northeast Director is a senior leader responsible for developing and running comprehensive campaigns to win community benefits agreements in the Northeast. We are taking on powerful corporations that are receiving significant amounts of public money—and should provide real benefits and protections to workers and communities in exchange. The director will lead a team of organizers, researchers, and policy staff to win agreements with these corporations, and to pass just and inclusive government purchasing policies.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead Strategic Campaign Development
    • Lead team in winning community benefits campaigns at green manufacturers, including leading community and worker organizing around the factories and developing a research program to investigate conditions at the factories.
    • Lead in the development and management of comprehensive campaigns that integrate research, organizing, communications, legal, and policy strategies.
    • Build substantial relationships and engage high-level stakeholders in supporting our work, including public officials, unions, coalition partners, journalists, and funders.
  • Lead & Develop a High-Performing Team
    • Develop and manage a staff team from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, holding them accountable to achieving programmatic goals and providing opportunities for professional development.
    • Set strategic direction for JMA campaigns in the Northeast.
    • Develop and manage the Northeast team budget.
  • Contribute to Organizational Leadership
    • Assist with fundraising, provide peer evaluations, facilitate internal trainings, and participate in JMA staff committees (not to exceed 20% of time).
    • Ensure compliance with all organizational policies and procedures—both timely attention to individual administrative responsibilities as well as oversight to ensure the understanding and compliance of team members.
    • As a member of the management team, contribute to strategic planning, cross-team collaboration, and the development of organization-wide policies and systems.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years organizing experience with a union, community organization, or other advocacy group.
  • At least 3 of those years as a lead or organizing manager in a supervisory capacity.
  • Experience with comprehensive campaigns or policy development is a plus.

Requirements

  • Good strategic thinking: ability to power map, plan, and execute campaigns to win policy victories and community benefits agreements.
  • Significant knowledge of the labor movement in the U.S. and basic understanding of local union needs and concerns.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to tailor messages to clearly and persuasively communicate JMA’s work to the public and inspire people to support our work.
  • Ability to build and sustain authentic and productive working relationships with colleagues across race and other group identities, including JMA employees as well as external partners.
  • Ability to continually assess and thoughtfully develop the leadership of team members through regular 1:1s, setting of annual goals and benchmarks, and annual performance evaluations.
  • Facilitation skills and an ability to unite the team on overall goals, strategic direction, and campaign/work plans.
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, empathy, and social skills in work and interpersonal interactions.
  • Ability to participate in a culture of feedback with a commitment to continually strengthening the practice of “courageous conversations.”
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, solve problems, and overcome obstacles to get the work done.
  • Must maintain flexibility: be ready to take advantage of unexpected opportunities and adapt quickly to change.
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure, and meet deadlines while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Familiarity with GoogleSuite.

Benefits

  • Salary: $105,000 - $138,000 (based on experience and location).
  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision (employee + dependents).
  • Generous PTO, including a two-week winter break and sabbatical after 5 years.
  • 401(k) with 5% employer contribution.
  • Remote work support (home office setup, internet stipend).
  • Professional development opportunities.
  • PSLF-eligible employer.
