[Hiring] Meteorologist @The Weather Company

1wk ago - The Weather Company is hiring a remote Meteorologist. πŸ’Έ Salary: unspecified πŸ“Location: UK

Role Description

As a Meteorologist on The Weather Company’s UK desk, you are the weather expert for North America while the U.S. sleeps. You analyze the forecast, explain what is happening and why, and turn it into clear, accurate coverage for millions of users on Weather.com and The Weather Channel app. You work alongside the UK Assignment Editor and hand off cleanly to the U.S. team, so the morning audience wakes up to a forecast and story they can trust.

The impact you'll make:

  • Own the science overnight
    • Monitor and analyze North American weather overnight and early morning: model guidance, observations, radar, and satellite.
    • Write and review forecast-driven stories, with the right level of confidence and detail for a general audience, making use of The Weather Company’s tools and reporting systems as well as other trusted models.
    • Provide expert guidance on severe weather, tropical systems, winter storms, air quality, flooding and other high-impact events as they develop.
    • Hold the line on scientific accuracy under time pressure and with limited backup.
  • Support breaking coverage
    • Work with the UK Assignment Editor to prioritize what leads, what waits, and what needs a closer look.
    • Flag developing high-impact weather early and know when it is worth waking someone up.
    • Contribute to video and social content, including identifying network clips for posting and writing original scripts for handoff to the U.S. team.
  • Coordinate across teams
    • Hand off in-progress forecasts and threats to the U.S. meteorology team each morning, and pick up open threads at night.
    • Keep a clear log of what was changed, flagged and escalated.
    • Work with editorial, video and product so nothing falls through the time-zone gap.

Qualifications

  • Degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, or a related field.
  • 3+ years experience as an operational or broadcast meteorologist, with strong forecasting skills.
  • Working knowledge of North American weather patterns, including severe weather, tropical systems, wildfires and winter weather.
  • Ability to explain complex weather clearly and quickly to a general audience.
  • Self-directed and calm under pressure. You are comfortable making calls with limited backup.
  • Eligible to work in the UK and able to reliably cover the U.S. overnight / early-morning window.

Requirements

  • Professional certification or membership (for example, RMetS, AMS, or NWA).
  • On-camera or video experience.
  • Experience with a 24/7 or breaking-news operation.
