Role Description

Priority Group Services NJ is building a roster of professional interpreters for New Jersey courts, hospitals and clinics, schools, law firms and community agencies. Assignments are on-site, by phone (OPI) and by video (VRI).

• Pay (independent contractor, 1099, as-needed)
• NJ court assignments:
  • $280 half day / $495 full day (Journey)
  • $320 / $566 (Master), in line with the NJ Judiciary rate table
  • Languages other than Spanish: about 10% above that table
• On-site medical, legal and community:
  • $32 to $35 per hour Spanish
  • $40 to $45 per hour other languages (2-hour minimum, then 15-minute steps)
• ASL (RID certified), on-site: $55 to $65 per hour (2-hour minimum)
• Phone (OPI):
  • $0.30 to $0.40 per minute Spanish
  • $0.50 to $0.65 per minute other languages
• Video (VRI):
  • $0.45 to $0.60 per minute Spanish
  • $0.60 to $0.75 per minute other languages
• Rate within each range depends on your credentials (NJ Judiciary tier, CCHI or CMI, RID)
• Half the fee is paid on cancellations inside 24 hours
• Mileage is paid past 60 miles round trip

Qualifications

• Fluency in English and your working language(s)
• Consecutive and simultaneous interpreting and sight translation skills
• For court work: approval by the NJ Judiciary as a Master or Journey interpreter in your language, or federal court certification
• Conditionally approved interpreters are placed only where the court accepts them
• For medical work: CCHI or NBCMI (CMI) certification preferred, or documented medical interpreter training plus experience
• For ASL: RID certification
• You follow the NJ Code of Professional Conduct for Interpreters: accuracy, impartiality and confidentiality
• A background check, a language proficiency assessment and a short practice session during onboarding
• For phone and video work: a quiet private room, a headset, a computer and a stable internet connection

Requirements

• Statewide assignments, most on-site work in Essex, Hudson, Union, Passaic, Bergen, Middlesex, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean counties
• Phone and video work can be done from anywhere in New Jersey
