Role Description

The New York Times is looking for an experienced correspondent based in Seattle to helm the Pacific Northwest region as its bureau chief.

  • Produce a portfolio of work that ranges from breaking news stories to enterprise, accountability pieces and scoops, embracing a variety of story formats and collaborations.
  • Conceive coverage plans and lead in proposing revelatory follows and deeper work on breaking news.
  • Drive a sense of what is coming next by watching themes in the region and a calendar of upcoming news and events.
  • Oversee what is happening in the region on a constant basis, scanning competition and guiding editors on the relevance of stories.
  • Act as the Times’ ambassador to the region, sharing authority and expertise with colleagues.
  • Cultivate a deep source network of authorities, politicians, sheriffs, union reps, cultural figures, law enforcement, and agency representatives.
  • Develop relationships with stringers and freelancers in the region, adding new talent and suggesting contributors for stories.
  • Brainstorm and develop ideas with colleagues in the region or on adjacent beats, initiating collaborations when opportunities arise.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of the value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to the mission.
  • Report to a National Editor.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years’ experience at a journalism or media company.
  • 5+ years of experience reporting from a region for a national and global audience.
  • Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment.
  • A portfolio that includes politics, news, enterprise, and analysis.

Requirements

  • Experience with nontraditional story formats.

Benefits

  • The annual base pay range for this role is between $180,000 — $190,000 USD.
